It's not often you see sporting management simulators in such a comic-book arcade style. Still, here we have World Championship Boxing Manager 2. The visual element brings an intriguing edge to this boxing sim even without clicking a button. And as someone that's not overly invested in the sport, it's undoubtedly a point of intrigue for the game.
So I have not played the first one, nor do I have much experience with boxing sims. Still, all sports sims are just puzzlers that require a bit of logical prowess. At least that's been my foray into the genre, where there have been some outstanding simulator experiences. World Championship Boxing Manager 2 has the chance to impress a newbie like myself, so let's get stuck in.
Storybook Boxer
The design approach is interesting about World Championship Boxing Manager 2. The sporting sim was made to bring accessibility to the game, simplifying management mechanics, making it visually appealing, yet retaining the intricate elements to form strategies for success. The instantly stands out about the title relative to other genre offerings that look more like spreadsheets than games.
So how does World Championship Boxing Manager 2 work? Players will jump into a 32-bit world, creating fighters and managing them to international glory. The story element of each boxer is put at the forefront, with engaging visuals showcasing the fights, narrative, and rituals of your prospective champion boxer. It feels very immersive from the get-go, something not usually seen in sporting sims.
The realities of the sport are forfeited in favor of a more dramatic experience. Real-life boxing fans may find themselves irritated that some of the management mechanics look to create a more Hollywood-esque scene rather than touch on the intricacies of boxing. Some strategic decisions are omitted to let casual players effortlessly click their way to success.
However, the diversity of visuals, narrative, and gameplay presents a unique take on a sports simulator. While nothing about World Championship Boxing Manager 2 feels remarkably faithful to the sport, it does leave players impressed at how you can take a different approach to the genre.
More About the Flair
If you were looking for a real-life boxing sim, you probably wouldn't be particularly impressed with World Championship Boxing Manager 2. It's about as accurate as Blood Bowl is to American football. But players that don't have an affiliation with the sport might find some excellent entertainment value in the game, creating a humble story from street boxer to world champion.
So here's the gist of World Championship Boxing Management 2. Play if you enjoy a bit of overzealous drama from your sports. Don't play if you're expecting a simulator that addresses the real-life management structure of boxing.
