Going back to play the classics you usually find yourself getting into the most popular titles of that time, but there were plenty of interesting games back in the day. We are not talking about games like Zelda and the first Super Mario Games, but actually going into the old arcade machines and playing. Some of those arcade machines got a home version thanks to the NES, and even though BurgerTime doesn't say Donkey Kong, it's a nice deal all the same. So let's talk about BurgerTime this time.

A great port

Even though the term port is much more common nowadays, it was still nevertheless a port from an arcade machine to a home console. BurgerTime was a one to one port, with all the same features and all the same gameplay mechanics you’d be used to seeing in arcades.

So if you used to love playing this game in the arcade machine, you’ll love it in its Nintendo Entertainment System form. It features almost the same visuals as in the arcade machine and the same controls. Even though back in those days these places were very loud, it also has a great sound port brought directly from the arcade version to your home console.

Gameplay

Games back then used to be far simpler than what they are right now, and BurgerTime is a clear example of this. The controls stick to the very basics, you can move, climb ladders, jump, dodge, and attack. You'll have to collect the parts of the burger in the level to make them drop and pile together to form the burgers. But of course, there are enemies in the way that try to stop you, luckily, you can defend yourself with your pepper attack. Counter the enemies and make some great hamburgers at each level. The more enemies you defeat and the less damage you get, the more points you receive.

Plot

If you're looking for a plot, this isn't the game for you. It's a pretty basic title, you play as Chef Peter Pepper and you make hamburgers. There are a bunch of enemies such as evil hot dogs, Mr. Egg, Mr. Pickle, and the evil king of the veggies, King Broccoli. Aside from that, there isn't really much plot or story, but after all, it's a simple game for short game sessions. The goal in this game is just to have some fun and nothing more.

Donkey Kong became a classic not only for the characters and the Nintendo Branding, but all the elements in the game combined. In BurgerTime there are a lot of lacking elements to create a classic. It ends up feeling like a really old game, whereas you can play Donkey Kong and play a classic.

5

The visuals are not terrible but are pretty bland, the pitch-black background, bland music and unimaginative enemies don't help the game a lot. The music is okay, but it's nothing memorable. Still, you can actually have some fun trying to beat your scores and competing in the 2 player mode. Just like in most arcade games, the replayability is there, but it's a game meant to be played for short periods.

Pros

  • Fun and competitive

Cons

  • Bland
  • There are bugs and glitches
