If you already like Joe and his buddy Mac, you'll like 'em even more after playing this long, colorful game.

Dino Dudes

Ever cheerful, and ever popular, Joe and Mac have appeared in several other incarnations, and this is as good as any. Their prehistoric world is filled with more enemies than ever, and the boys have some new weapons. Not only can they whack baddies with their clubs, jump on small enemies, and throw some weapons, they can spit seeds, bones, and fire when they eat the right items. As usual, a two-player mode offers simultaneous cave kicks. Plus, in Super 2P mode, players can bop each other. The controls are quick and effective throughout.

ProTip: Nail this Stegosaurus only when his mouth is open.

Good Graphics

The graphics are what you expect from this prehistoric pair: big, cartoony sprites, Stone Age grouches, and colorful, multi-scrolling backgrounds. The large, stiff- moving monster bosses are right out of Jurassic Park, but they're easier to beat than the tough dinos in that game.

Joe has to jump up in his kave kart to collect goodies. Be quick, though, because obstacles lie ahead.

The music pulses with fast- paced, tropical rhythms that complement the action nicely. The sound effects have been diminished from the first J&M adventure, however. You'll wish there were more growls and roars from the menagerie of enemies.

Prehistoric Pranks

There's not much to think about in this easy-going game. Just bop everything in sight, admire the scenery, and have fun. It's a blast in the past!

Since I played the first Joe & Mac adventure back in Super Nintendo's early days, I admit I wasn't too excited to hear about this sequel. Not that the first game was bad - it was just a fairly ho-hum side-scroller. But Joe & Mac 2: Lost in the Tropics throws a little spice into the prehistoric mix, improving the original.

The story is simple: The village crown has been stolen by a cave-dwelling creep named Gork, and it's up to our loveable duo to get it back. They must bash their way through six different areas chock-full of enemy cavemen, dinosaurs, and territorial dangers.

The action scenes are almost identical to the first game, except there's a lot more variety in your enemies and surroundings. For instance, one level takes you from an avalanche-threatening mountainside into a snow-covered cave, then into an ice-slickened tunnel. You end up covering a lot of ground in each level.

New to Joe & Mac 2 is a non-linear map screen from which the prehistoric pair travel across the island to reach their next action scene. It doesn't factor much in the game, but it's nice to choose the order in which you play the stages. The two villages are another addition. You can't really call them levels unto themselves since they're mostly for fun, but visit them to view the landscape through a telescope, try new food, or even buy flowers for a marriage proposal. Nothing you do in the villages is vital to the game, but it's a great break between bashing dinos.

Action fans will find Joe & Mac 2 only slightly above average, but it's still good fun. So while you may not want to move it to the top of your "games to buy" list, it's not a bad title for your hack-'n'-bash library.

Data East's comical cavemen are at it again! Joe and his cave bud, Mac, return to the Super NES, in a whole new adventure that makes the first pale in comparison. Evil cave dudes are making their lives miserable, so the duo is fighting back. Joe and Mac have a new assortment of weapons, plus their trusty clubs. When they hit another caveman, they will drill him into the ground!

This cart has a lot of humorous moments, and is a lot of fun to play.

This time around, there are lots of secrets to be discovered. Power-ups abound, but you must search for them. Joe and Mac 2 is a terrific sequel. If you enjoyed the prehistoric mania of the first, then you'll definitely like this one. Lots of improvements!

Joe & Mac II is really good. It has the play control the first one lacked, and it sort of has an RPG feel to it. The addition of towns was a nice feature, plus the fact that you can find a wife and build up your cave is also really neat. The music and animation is a far cry from the first. It's really easy to get into this one folks. This is one of the better action games for the Super Nintendo. I highly recommend this cart.

Wow! I was completely taken by surprise with this one. Thinking it was just another mindless action game, Joe & Mac II proves that blending action game role-playing can make a great game. The graphics are absolutely stunning and the jungle tunes have a great beat. The levels are long and have interesting surprises, but they can also be rather bland in the action department. Overall, Joe & Mac II is a definite hit.

I really didn't care much for the first Joe & Mac mainly because of its poor game play. This sequel has really improved on that and I also added a pseudo role-playing feature. There were other cool additions, like a map where you can play levels in any order and villages to visit where you can build on your quest. I totally got into it! The graphics and music have also taken a step forward. A truly fabulous game!

Better than the first Joe & Mac. This second version has many awesome animations of Joe and Mac and their evil enemies. Better graphics are a welcome improvement. More things to do like going around the market and buying items to help you through the game are appreciated, and the game play is excellent. Cool power-ups like spit to get rid of your enemies. Can I say...Woow!
