There's nothing more frightening or more foolhardy than getting into a huge laser-gunning war machine and freezing up like a rabbit in headlights. Show some guts and grab your guns, because Mech Warriors don't take no for an answer.

A Few Good Mechs

You are Herras Ragen, a freelance MechWarrior who is looking for the infamous Dark Wing Lance. No, it's not a fast-food chicken outlet. It's a renegade mercenary cartel.

  • When you get tips from the club patrons, write down where to go next and all of the names.

In this one-player, cockpit-perspective blast-em-up, you pilot a Mech robotic vehicle and take different assignments from the House of Davion, which is paying top dollar for the eradication of the Dark Wing Lance. The House has a variety of work options, such as Security Duty, Reconnaissance Missions, and Siege Campaigns.

Don't get all weak in the knees, son. Your Mech can be customized with a multitude of hardware, including Lasers, Homing Missiles, and more. You can also upgrade your armor, engine, and jets. When you save up enough money, you can buy totally new Mechs, but the price is steep, so spend wisely.

ProTips:

  • Remember that your Mech has certain weight limitations, so don't load it up too much.
  • Only buy weapons that you're sure you'll need. The repair facility will buy back anything you have to sell, but at an extremely reduced rate.

In a clutch, you can drop some jets to gain weapons. You'll need the extra help, because the enemy Mechs comes in three varieties: Mean, Meaner, and Mother-In-Law Mean. Believe me, they take their job seriously, so keep on your metal toes. Familiarizing yourself with the various control buttons (which are tricky) takes patience, practice, and skill. You've got to use your jets, cannons, and missiles (sometimes simultaneously), so it's best to warm up in the Practice mode.

You start the game at the home base of Galatea, which comes equipped with a Mech repair facility, a club, and the headquarters (known as GHQ). At GHQ, you can get info on what you'll be facing, and save your game.

Always up the ante for a mission at least once. The pockets of House Davion are large and deep.

At the club, you'll pick up lucrative underground info, as well as the whereabouts of the Dark Wing Lance. The repair facility is where you can burn up the bucks loading up your mech. Go Ahead... Mech My Day!

The graphics in MechWarrior are not impressive. They have a very sterile and mechanical feel to them. There are times when you're firing weapons at enemy Mechs and you're not sure whether you've hit them or not, because the graphics don't really make sense until the Mech is up close and personal. By that time, it's too late.

The sounds of MechWarrior are deafening. Your cannons crackle and your missiles roar to their final destructive destination. If sounds of mechanical mashing are not your cup of tea, lower the volume.

So what's to like about MechWarrior? It's a battle simulator and a strategy game, where graphics are not as important to game play as they are in other games, such as action/adventures or role-plays.

father against the insidious Dark Wing Lance. From an in-the-'bot, cockpit view, you travel through dangerous worlds. As Herras Ragen, blast your way through a multitude of assignments and earn the cash that goes with the job. Then you're off on a spending spree in order to buy better 'bots. Choose from six shiny new metal monsters, each with its own particular brand of mayhem, or upgrade your favorite hunk of metal to get it just the way you want it.

Based on the original RPG and the popular simulation, the futuristic world of Mech combat is now brought to life on the Super NES! Similar to the simulator version, you're given a cockpit view of the action, and access to a vast array of weapons.

After the battle, Mechs can return to a home base and use bounty money to upgrade Mechs and buy valuable information, Mechwarrior is guar teed heavy metal action!

Under the orders of Prince Hanse Davion, a mercenary force known as the Dark Wing Lance must be destroyed. They have killed many innocent people, including your own family. It's up to you to take vengeance on these criminals. It won't be easy, for they have powerful mech units. After ten years of saving up money, you finally have enough to buy a mech, and weapons. Fight in ferocious battles to the death in a unique first-person perspective.

This game creates the feeling of a battlefield where death can come at any time. The sounds are realistic from the roaring cannons, to the dull hum of a laser. You have the ability to modify your mech until it is the deadliest one around. Begin your mission in the heart of the city. In the mech shop equip your mech with the necessary weapons to survive the first mission. In the GHQ, you can choose your assignments, and maybe even bargain for more money. Go to the tavern and talk to weird and interesting space veterans. They have plenty of valuable advice and information.

You also have a multitude of controls to master. In a short time, any mech pilot can be an expert in ground combat! The whole experience is ovewhelming.

The year is 3027 and you are Herras Ragen. Ten years ago, you watched the murder of your entire family by the renegade mercenary 'Mech cartel. Dark Wing Lance. Now as a free-lance MechWarrior, selling your skilled 'Mech services, you obsessively track down every rumor about Dark Wing Lance so that you may quench your thirst for vengeance.

What's a 'Mech, you might ask? Well, its essentially a personal tanklike armored vehicle that uses bipedal locomotion. Most model 'Mechs also have propulsion jets so they can fly around with limited ability.

If you're expecting this game to be a sci-fi space shoot-'em-up, you're dead wrong. For starters, MechWarrior has all the characteristics of a simulator. Just like in a flight simulator, you have a vehicle that you must pilot. In this case, it's a 'Mech instead of a plane or a jet. You also have missions that you can accept or reject. And, finally, the last characteristic that makes this game a simulator in my book, is that you can modify/improve the armament that the 'Mech carries. Well, now that I've tooted my horn on what genre MechWarrior falls into, lets move on.

You're given a basic low-end model 'Mech with a minimal spread of weapons to start off with. You have several choices of missions to pick from, though they all vary in difficulty. And the harder the mission, the more C-bills you'll earn. It's critical that you save enough C-bills so that you can buy another 'Mech or upgrade one of the current beasties you already own. Gamers can also haggle about how much pay they want for a given mission.

There's a list of six 'Mechs to choose from. All have different attributes (i.e., speed, armor factor and armament) and each is priced according to its attributes. MechWarrior is not an easy game. I originally made the mistake of jumping directly into playing the game without giving myself some time to practice. I also made frequent use of the game's save feature. Mech Warrior can be a little overwhelming at first, especially if you get greedy and take on missions that pay a lot of C-bills. Even if you're successful in coming out alive from a high-paying mission, there's a good chance that you've sustained heavy damage to you're 'Mech--and that translates into expensive repair costs.

MechWarrior is one of the most original games to come out for the Super NES lately. The closest that I've seen to it is the jet pack contest in Pilotwings. Play perspective during the battle sequences is from inside the cockpit of the 'Mech looking out.

What bothered me the most about MechWarrior was its music. Its redundant dismal tones became an irritant after awhile, and I found myself turning down the volume to the lowest setting possible. Beam Software, the developers of MechWarrior, could also have done a better job on the explosions and laser sound effects.

If you've ever had the opportunity to visit one of the few Battletech Centers in existence and play a game or two, you'll feel at home playing MechWarrior. It might not have all of the hype and hoopla that the Battletech Centers offer, but it's the closest thing to actually playing a game, and it won't cost you a small fortune either.
