You like hockey? You like mutants? You like bloodshed? Then this is the game for you! Anyone who enjoyed last year's Mutant League Football will get the same thrills and laughs from EA's latest creepy creation.

ProTips:

  • Don't skate where you see thin-ice cracks or holes. Players will fall through and disappear for the rest of the period.
  • Practice against the weak Mighty Weenies before you take on harder teams.

Mutant Mayhem

Here's hockey the way it's played in some demon's bloodiest nightmare. Players with names like Spew Puke and Grimly play for sci-fi teams such as the Cadavers and the Derangers, in alien stadiums with names like Madness Square Garden and St. Mucus Arena. Mines explode on the ice, chainsaws and axes are allowed, players disappear into holes, and sharks patrol the ice.

Oh, yes, there's a hockey game, too, with an adjustable Death Index so you can control the violence. Hockey purists can set the Index to Rough if they want more hockey than bloodshed, while Mutant maniacs can play at the Annihilation setting for maximum carnage.

  • You can win by Forfeit If you set the Death Index to a high number and focus on knocking out opposing players so they can't field a team.
  • Injure or kill the opposing Goalie with one of the weapons you pick up.
  • Try to pick fights. When you win, your opponent will stay in the penalty box longer and you'll have a Power Play.

MHL Hockey'94

Just as fans of Mutant League Football will recognize the players and teams, fans of NHL Hockey '94 will recognize the game play. You use the same button presses, and get the same One-Timers that are in the realistic hockey games. The controls aren't as efficient, however, making it harder to complete passes and play tight defense.

Check opponents into the spikes at Madness Square Garden and they'll be impaled, giving you an instant Power Play.

The gruesome graphics are uneven. They're best when they're conveying humor -- the giant slug that works as the Zamboni, for instance. Unfortunately, the skaters are hard to tell apart, and you can't always identify the weapons.

The sounds are appropriately rockin' for this grim fairy tale. The music cranks along with rowdy defiance, and the sound effects have the right ugliness to complement the gory graphics. Commentary would've helped you follow the game, though.

At the Face-Off, use your weapon against your opponent. You should be able to knock him out and take off with the puck.

Scary Fun

It's creepy, it's sickening. It's hilarious! Mutant League Hockey has the most brutality seen on a rink since Tonya Harding tried out for the Olympics. This one takes a medal, just not a Gold.

Those wacky mutants are back, and this time they're bringing their unique and gruesome brand of cutthroat tactics and bizarre humor to hockey. There's always been roughness in the rink, but Mutant League Hockey makes the National Hockey League look like a slumber party. New faces join the fray in Mutant League Hockey, but there are holdovers from Mutant League Football as well, including Coach Bricka, Bones Jackson, and K.T. Slayer.

Three of the 23 teams are comprised of all-stars, while several standard teams are based on popular NHL teams. For example, the Chilly Liars - led by Skingros and Wrechin - are the Mutant League counterparts to the NHL's Philadelphia Flyers and team leaders Eric Lindros and Mark Recchi. Each team has its own arena filled with various deadly obstacles and distractions. Rosters contain three types of players - strong, slow trolls; "agile, but fragile" robots; and fast-and-fearless skeletons.

EA's 4 Way Play adapter allows up to four people to join in the melee while playing a single exhibition game or even making a run for the Mutant League Monster Cup in the playoffs.

Fans of EA Sport's famous NHL Hockey series will find Mutant League to be quite a different game - not only because it controls differently, but also because scoring goals isn't always the top priority. Weapons, trick plays, and fights often keep the game's focus more on beating your opponent senseless than beating the goalie with a shot. But if you quickly discover that you can combine the two and beat the goalie senseless, then you've jumped right into the spirit of Mutant League Hockey.

If you think that video games are losing their violent edge, think again. Electronic Arts' Mutant League Hockey starts where their football game left off. This completely original hockey game has all sorts of strange things happening. Where else can you find a shark and an octopus waiting and ready to devour players? This bizarre Genesis cart not only has you able to maul the members of the opposite team, but you can also kill them. Mutant League Hockey will satisfy anyone's appetite for blood and guts. Obviously this game wasn't intended for children, as the extreme violence is quite spectacular. Since it is made by Electronic Arts, you can be assured that the game play will be top-notch. One look at the screens below, and you can easily see that the programmers took their time with this one. Mutant League Hockey is almost as violent as the real sport. It's strange, but awesome. If you like hockey, this is one that you'll find to be totally different from the others.
