It's hard to explain the wave that Capcom has been riding in recent years and since the last generation. They've released masterpiece after masterpiece, and solid games coming from all their IPs. They've been a beacon of hope for many companies and gamers out there, to see a company taking care of the IPs all their fans love and enjoy. And even though most of the amazing games they've released have been from their pre-existing franchises, this one is more like a spiritual successor to one of their most unique titles. The name of the game is Exoprimal, and even though it isn't directly a spiritual successor, it still has some of its spirit. But what is Exoprimal all about? Well, let's talk about it!
About the game
The plot premise of Exorprimal is not exactly original, but it has a certain absurd, pulp, and sarcastic touch that can compensate for the above. In the year 2040, our avatar, which we customize with a simple editor, joins the ranks of Aibius. The corporation tries to put an end to the waves of dinosaurs that threaten humanity through the use of exo-armor (similar to the halberds of Anthem) and with artificial intelligence, Leviathan, which predicts where new invasions will occur.
It doesn't take long before Leviathan goes berserk and immerses the ex-soldiers in endlessly repeating aptitude tests aimed at developing unbeatable battle techniques against the tides of hundreds of thousands of sauropsids ravaging the cities. The method of narrating this storyline is interesting, through AI monologues before entering the game and with gameplay changes, as well as the use of cinematic cutscenes from time to time. In the beta, there was not much of this content, so it remains to be seen the pace at which the story evolves, or whether it will also be supported by events or seasons, as is usual in online games.
A long shot
Earlier we mentioned that this game works as some sort of spiritual successor, and we were talking of the old game Dino Crisis. However, we know that these games have nothing in common when it comes to genres and gameplay. And sure, it may be a long stretch to call it like that.
But come on, the game does indeed release in a time when we were all waiting to see the classic Dino Crisis get the Resident Evil treatment and see a revival adapted to the modern gaming world. And even though the games are not related, they both deal with aliens, dinosaurs, and having a good time, even if they do it in a very different ways.
Review: 8/10
At the moment, Exoprimal doesn't feel very different from co-op shooters like World War Z and Left 4 Dead by swapping out the undead for dinosaurs and adding a layer of hero shooter where each of the five players on the team has a specific role.
However, it adds several ideas to the standardized cooperative shooter gameplay against hordes of enemies that set it apart from the rest.
Pros:
- Great graphics
- Awesome gameplay
- Fun characters
Cons:
- The game seems to be lacking content
