No guts, no glory - right? The name of this game pretty much defines what it's all about. It's really violent in the most hilariously stupid manner. Guts and Glory is a racer that encourages its players to find ways to make their drivers perish in the goriest ways possible. It's also tricky enough to actually complete the course.
The game has become a cult classic amongst its backers and indie gamers. Two things happen when games like this achieve that status. They are either so bad - that it's funny. Or they transcend video game brilliance. In both cases, they are usually something too obscure for the masses. Let's put that theory to test with HakJaks latest bloody offering.
Maintain the Course, Captain!
Guts and Glory is a game that only offers the bare essentials to focus on one element - the violence. There's not much backstory apart from the need for the character's survival - and the progression style is pretty basic at best. The composition of the game feels very arcade-like, minus the polish and the challenge.
You almost get the impression that this game was built with the idea of being a cult classic. You'll use a variety of vehicles from bicycles to cars - navigating courses with some bizarre obstacles. Don't you dare touch them - you'll face dire consequences. Otherwise, you will turn into a bloody mess with sprout streams of red and limbs being torn to shreds? The poor visuals and the over-the-top hit mechanics make this game hilarious. Barely touching a cactus will make your character explode into a million pieces. Or a projectile hitting your passenger will have their head roll while you carry on to try and continue the course. This game was poorly made for the sake of some cheap laughs - no if, and, or but about it. There's no reward system and near-impossible challenges - little enjoyment is had outside the first couple hours when it's all still shocking.
It's a Bloody Mess
Guts and Glory take on the spirit of Surgeon Simulator in the persona of a racing game. There's no real objective other than how much you can comically screw up.
This is definitely one of those games where you have a few friends over, share the controller, and laugh at all the ridiculous outcomes possible. Nothing more there to take away from this.
With more focus on disembowelment than racing, if you're looking for an actual game - don't even bother with Guts and Glory. Its saving grace is how much comedy it provides - and its level of difficulty can be intriguing for the more eccentric gamer. After that notion, however, there's absolutely nothing to take away from Guts and Glory.
Pros:
- The over-the-top deaths are funny to watch
- All the earmarks of a cult classic
Cons:
- Not much game outside the comedy aspects
- Feels like development was rushed for the sake of silliness
- No rewards system, little replayability
