I went to high school in the 90s so a game like The Big Con which is set in the 90s is always going to grab my attention. This is a fun crime caper that is one of the more interesting indie titles that I have seen so far in 2021. As I write this the game is not fully finished, but if you like the 90s and games that have a real sense of style then I highly recommend that you grab your Game Boy, your portable CD player, some Pepsi Tropical Chill, and come along for this wild ride.
A Road Trip With A Purpose
The plot of The Big Con is actually like something that would have been in a 90s comedy staring someone like Pauly Shore or Rob Schneider! We play as Ali, a spunky and cool teenager who is great at getting the good old five fingered discount if you know what I mean.
Her family owns a video story and it is under threat by these douche bag loan sharks. This sends Ali on a wild road trip where she tries to make as much money as she can to help her family out. The story is made for laughs and it is well done and as a kid of the 90s, it has many references that put a huge smile on my face.
The Con Is On
While pickpocketing the basics of how you can con people, Ali has to work hard to pull some scams off. The Big Con is great in that it gives you many different ways that you can go about things. For example, you may need to wear a disguise to get past someone or trick them into letting you in somewhere. You might need to get a password or pick a lock to get in some places.
Sometimes a bit of breaking and entering is required. There is a lot of variety to the game and it all adds up to a lot of fun. I would say that the game has a real stealth thing going on and I get that may not be for everyone. I do feel that there is a fair bit of trial and error here, but that is all part of the fun.
Like, Totally Bodacious… Like Totally
The whole art style of The Big Con is bright and wild and that is what I think of when I think of the 90s. Bright and zany colors were the order of the day and I vividly remember bright neon pink being a thing and wild baseball caps and basketball boots with huge laces.
All that and more is here. The whole game just has so much style that it is impossible not to fall in love with it. The only thing I will say is that I do feel you have to be a 90s kid to truly appreciate the whole style of the game.
I think that there are a ton of great indie games being released this year, but The Big Con is a game that feels like it was made just for me. I love and I mean love the whole 90s style that this game has going. It has some great puzzles and different cons that you can try and pull off and I think it is pretty awesome the way the game leaves how you go about doing much of what you have to do up to you!
