The Adventures of Dr. Franken by DTMC is a too-familiar, multi-scrolling, side- view action game. It's as predictable as the monster tale it very loosely resembles.

ProTip: If you're low on energy, kick an enemy and grab the batteries they usually leave behind. Now, walk a little off-screen, and then return to the same spot to find the same enemy again. Repeat this until you're fully charged.

The Doctor Is Out

To be perfectly accurate, this game should really be called "The Adventures of Dr. Franken's Monster," since the doctor never appears. In this game, you're a monster traipsing to 19 spots around the world from your homeland of Transylvania, and you're on the lookout for pieces of your girlfriend, Bitsy. You must beat off beasts galore in a quest to reconstruct your mate.

Dr. Franken is fun to look at and cool to listen to. The monsters look sharp and have goofy comic details. The Franken monster, for example, sports shades, sandals, and jams. The sound effects blast some nice screams and grunts.

Even so, Dr. Franken the game is definitely missing several key factors. First of all, any game with this many levels needs some sort of game save or continue, rather than forcing you to start from the beginning when you're zapped.

Secondly, despite its title, Dr. Franken lacks a sense of adventure. The walk-kick-and-jump game play is as ancient as the Frankenstein story. Finally, the fighting controls are monstrous. Sometimes you need to make precise full-body strikes, other times you must barely touch a foe. Either way, the bad guys frequently get you first.

Monstrous

Don't expect the Adventures of Dr. Franken to make any miraculous resurrections. Like the sad Frankenstein monster, this game consists of bits and pieces from other games all mixed together, producing frightening results.

Some Bitsy pieces seem impossible to grab. Look around for special power-ups, or switches, to help you.
