Autopsy Simulator

For years, simulation games built around the world of medical care have been commonplace. People love the idea of playing doctor, or surgeon, or nurse. These are fun times for players who like games like this, though, which is why Woodland Games’ latest development, Autopsy Simulator, looks to be such a potential hit with fans.

However, let’s get one thing right – this lacks the cartoony charm of some other simulators out there. There is something more horrific about dealing with cadavers. This is a proper medical sim in that it tries to create the kind of horror-sim hybrid style that has become synonymous with the genre. Instead of having the cartoony style of something that feels like it is mimicking Operation!, the board game, this is serious.

Does that work? Or is Autopsy Simulator a little too serious for its own good?

A Medical Sim For Serious Players

First things first – this is not going to be like a lot of the medical sims that you have played out there. Most of those games create an almost cartoonish atmosphere, mimicking something more akin to Two Point Hospital than what Autopsy Simulator does. In ways, this reminds us more of something like the recent Resident Evil titles in that the atmosphere is almost something to dread.

For fans of horror-sim games, though, what Autopsy Simulator brings to the table looks very exciting indeed. You take on the role of a pathologist who spends their time looking at bodies, studying case files, and then trying to determine the cause of death. One thing to note – this is an 18, and the visuals are pretty intense. Bodies are anatomically accurate, too, so there is plenty of stuff to make you squirm.

What Autopsy Simulator does well, though, is create the kind of seriousness that would come with such a profession. If you ever have wanted even a glimpse of what being a pathologist would be like, then this is about as close as you are going to get in video game form.

Strikingly Eerie Medical Simulation (7.5/10)

What Autopsy Simulator does well, it does extremely well. The atmosphere is generally quite dour and unwelcoming, but the fact it has been created with real-life doctors involved means that it does not get too grim. There is a realism to this, though, that can be quite striking if you are not used to it. The development of the game and the desire to make bodies more than just somewhat realistic is admirable.

7.5

What we will say, though, is what we have seen from Autopsy Simulator makes it feel far more like a proper sim, as the name implies than a game. We would suggest that people who are used to having fun with party-style medical sims won’t be putting this game on for their friends to play with. Many of the other medical sims have a cartoonish atmosphere to them; Autopsy Simulator is nothing of the sort.

Pros

  • Visceral visual details and atmosphere work well in Autopsy Simulator
  • Realism is pretty significant, creating autopsies that avoid feeling gamified
  • Anatomically correct bodies are very impressive for the genre

Cons

  • A little too grim and realistic for those looking to have a fun time outside of simulation lovers
