NieR: Reincarnation

NieR: Reincarnation is one of two NieR games that we have gotten in 2021. This is a mobile game and before it was released, I had very high hopes. Visually, it fits in with what we love about the NieR series and it looked like this could be a very solid and impressive mobile RPG. I played this on a Samsung Galaxy S20, but as well as Android, it is also available for iOS. It has a clever graphics scaling system so that if you are on a less powerful device, you may still be able to play it.

Rage In The Cage

The setting for NieR: Reincarnation is the same universe that the last two Nier games have been set in. The game takes place in an area known as The Cage. The story is super weird as you progress through the cage, you get to relive memories of all these characters you come across.

In theory, this sounds like it would be great and the idea of the main character being an amnesiac who is led by a ghostly figure was something I thought would be very cool. The execution though, made me not really care for the majority of the characters I came across.

The Emotion Engine

The best thing I can say about NieR: Reincarnation is that it looks like a game that could be running on a PlayStation 3. This is a fantastic looking game and it 100 percent fits into the NieR world that we have come to know and love. The drab colors, the fine details, and the way it looks like an anime are all here. The first couple of hours are truly amazing and you will be excited to see what more lays in store. The thing is, as good as the game looks, variety is not exactly on offer here after the first few hours as it all starts to look the same.

Get Your Hand Out Of My Pocket

Ahh, NieR: Reincarnation is a mobile game so you probably knew that this was coming. Ok, I will start with the positives of the gameplay. The battles are kind of fun, there is an auto battle system here where the characters do their attacks on their own, leaving the special stuff up to you. I like this and think it works well for a mobile game. the problem is, this is a gacha style game and despite all the times I have had the chance to get a four-star character, it has not happened once! Granted, I have refused to spend any money on this game, but it is very in your face about doing so. The whole game feels like it is there just to get a buck here or a buck there out of you and that turned me off real fast.

Even without the gacha system, I have to say that there is not enough here in NieR: Reincarnation that would keep me interested in the long term. I like the premise of the game, but the story just never grabbed me and I found that the progression in the game was massively hampered unless I was willing to spend real money on it.

At the end of the day, it is free to play so it is worth checking out, but I would wager you will get bored of it before you come close to being tempted to spend real money on it.

Pros:

  • The game is very visually impressive
  • I liked how it let you change the graphics so it can run on less powerful devices
  • It certainly has that NieR look about it
  • I enjoyed the soundtrack

Cons:

  • The game is just not very fun to play after a short while
  • I do not think you can get far unless you are willing to spend real money
