Wizardry: The Five Ordeals

I have to say that Wizardry: The Five Ordeals is a game that is made for a very certain type of person. The original game was released all the way back in 1981 and then in 2006, we got another substantial release. This is a game that has a very dedicated set of fans and in Japan, this is probably one of the most popular dungeon crawlers that was ever made. The fact that they are bringing it back with this is really cool and if you do like this series, you have to check it out.

Deep In The Dungeon

From what I can tell there is no actual story for you to play through in Wizardry: The Five Ordeals. It has nothing to do with the first five games and instead is being touted as some kind of remaster/re-release of the 2006 game. Wizardry: The Five Ordeals is all about going through dungeons, slaying monsters, and getting loot.

The Scenario Editor Is Where It Is At

Remember how I said there was no proper story to play through in the game? Well, do not worry as the fan community has stepped up and thanks to the scenario editor, you can play through stories that other players have created. According to the Steam page, this game is going to feature scenarios that have been being made since 2006 by people in Japan. How these are translated is not actually said, but I am very intrigued here.

The idea that you can create your own story to play through and then share it with a buddy is very cool. When you think about it, in theory, you could technically have content forever as long as the community keeps making stuff. The gameplay on offer is your typical old-school dungeon crawler. It is very “old” in its game design and the enjoyment you will get all depends if you like this kind of thing.

Old Or Older? You Decide!

Wizardry: The Five Ordeals is kind of cool in the way the visuals are. If you watch the trailer or check out any footage of this online, you will notice that there are two very radically different styles when it comes to the way the game looks. You can play this in the proper 1981 wireframe barebone style if you want and that is cool. Without showing my age, back in the 80s at my school, we had a BBC Micro computer and the games looked just like this.

You can also play the game with much more modern visuals and there are some great monster designs here and this does give the game a more modern look. Having different UI and graphical options is really cool and I am sure people who are fans of this game will get a real kick out of this.

I have to be honest with you and say that I am not the person that Wizardry: The Five Ordeals is aimed at. I always have a hard time with these much older style of dungeon crawler so they have a hard time grabbing me. Still, if the Wizardry series is something you are familiar with and have enjoyed in the past, I do think this is worth your time checking out.

Pros:

  • It is a fun throwback
  • The scenario editor is really cool
  • I like how there are different UI options
  • Wizardry fans will love this game!

Cons:

  • I cannot see this winning over people who have never played the previous games
  • The translation on the Steam page is one of the worst of any game I have checked out!
