How the heck did I not know that My Little Pony: Fighting is Magic was a thing? What we have here is a one on one fighting game based on the popular animated series and toy line of the same name, only it is fighting is magic instead of friendship is magic. I fired this up to have a bit of fun with it, but I was shocked to see what a competent and fun fighting game it was! I would love to see this get worked on more (I know that there are people working on different versions) to expand it and make it even more awesome.

The Brony In The Room

Let me start by saying that you do not need to be a fan of or familiar with the series to appreciate My Little Pony: Fighting is Magic. I know next to nothing about the series, but I did recognize a few of the characters so that was kind of cool. The game does have a “story” mode, but this is nothing more than just picking your chosen pony and then fighting your way through the rest as well as a clone of yourself. I have heard that there are people trying to make an actual story mode for this game which I am sure would be fun to see.

Round 1, Fight!

Gameplay-wise, in the version of the game I played, you have six ponies that you can pick from in My Little Pony: Fighting is Magic. I ended up sticking with Applejack for the most part as I liked her cowboy stick and lasso. You have to win two out of the three rounds and defeat all of the other ponies. This game is no joke, it is very unforgiven, and do not be shocked if it takes you a while to get the hang of it and beat all the other ponies. It looks like it should be easy for little kids, but this game has been designed to be a proper fighting game and that is pretty damn cool.

Test Your Might

We have a four button system here in My Little Pony: Fighting is Magic. We have a weak, medium, and strong attack as well as a special attack button. Each pony has their own set of special moves and combos and the game has more of a Street Fighter vibe about it than a Mortal Kombat one as far as pulling off moves go. This is true for your block which is done by pressing away from your opponent as well as your super moves that are done with a meter that fills up, you also have a magic gem thing going on too, but if I am honest, I never quite figured out what that was. It is a solid fighter and I think with a bit more tweaking and more characters, it could be something awesome. However, as Hasbro keeps trying to shut the different versions down, I guess it would be very hard for someone to dedicate a ton of time to this.

Staying True To The Roots

As I said, I am not all that familiar with the show, but from what I have seen, My Little Pony: Fighting is Magic is trying its best to capture the look and sound of the show. The game for what is essentially a fan made game, looks amazing, it has that same kind of cell shaded look that the show does and from the little bit of research I did, I think that they have captured the ponies really well. The soundtrack is pretty solid too and it does have voice acting, but from what I have read, these are soundalikes and not sound files that are ripped from the show.

I would love to know what an actual fan of the show thinks of My Little Pony: Fighting is Magic. I was very surprised by this and I get why Hasbro would not want to have their ponies who are all about “friendship” be in a one on one fighting game, but it would be so awesome if this could get a full on release with some polish. I am not saying it is not polished, the mechanics are there, and it looks and sounds good. I just think that this has the potential to be something really unique and awesome.

Pros:

  • It is a fighting game with My Little Pony characters
  • I love how bright and colorful it is, they have tried to capture the show really well
  • There is more voice acting than you would think
  • At its core, this is a fun and solid one on one fighting game

Cons:

  • There is not much in the way of content here
  • A few people have tried to put their own spin on this so it’s hard to know what version is the best one to play
