3.0

Darkwing Duck brings together most of the elements that we've seen before in popular action/adventures like Mario and Sonic. But instead of creating an atmosphere of intensity and building upon the options to enhance the play mechanics, Darkwing Duck put me to sleep with a lack of interaction and challenge.

3.0

Perhaps the younger age group mike like this game but it is unlikely because the player control is not precise and leads to a lot of mistakes that should have not happened. A bit more exciting action would go a long ways to make this an enjoyable cart. The concept is good, it's just that it never got off the ground.

4.0

This game is missing a lot. This goose was cooked before he came to the Turbo. The coolest thing in the game is the magnifying glass on the stage select. The graphics are choppy and the play control really needs work. If you are going to make a game based on a popular character at least make it playable.

3.0

I think Darkwing Duck should stick to cartoons. This game is too slow! The game play offers no excitement, no ingenuity, and no fun. Struggling through Darkwing Duck was good for one thing, however; I managed to break my frustration time record of all time. This game is not very well done.

Game Reviews

The caped avenger of the latest cartoon serial will soon be coming to the Turbo! The crime league known as FOWL is up to their old and sneaky tricks again and you are the only one that can stop their dastardly plans in this high action game!

Calling DW! Calling DW! A city-wide crimewave has put a clamp on St. Canard and the city's in an uproar. No matter what it takes, we need "the terror that flaps in the night" to rescue us from the scourge of the F.O.W.L organization! It's a dirty, thankless job, but some duck's gotta do it.

Darkwing Does It Again

Fresh from a full season of Disney Afternoon crime-busting, Darkwing and friends are swooping into your Nintendo! That's right, Capcom (the same publisher that brought us animation greats, such as DuckTales and Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers) is responsible for this latest cartoon game for the NES. Although Darkwing brings along his goofy sidekick, Launchpad McQuack, and that screwy know-it-all, Professor J. Gander Hooter, this game's built for one duck, and one duck only.

Go Darkwing! Go Darkwing!

When Darkwing hits the streets, you'll immediately recognize the Mega Man/Chip 'N Dale action. His moves are tried-but-true, side-scrolling classics: run, jump, duck (no pun intended), shoot, grab, and hang. The hang move is particularly useful because it enables him to ride conveyor belts, reach high girders, or wait safely below ledges. Darkwing's armed with unlimited ammo for his trademark Gas gun (a basic pea-shooter), but he can also find Arrow, Thunder, and Heavy Gas cartridges for temporary use. Darkwing's last move, totally original and totally cool, is the Cape Barrier defense. Just hold down Up and he can deflect most enemy fire!

ProTip: Darkwing can enter hidden bonus stages by shooting in the air and touching the Go! icon if it appears. Inside these bonus stages, your best strategy is to stay in the middle of the screen, shoot the capsules which fall from the sky, and grab only the important power-ups and 1-ups.

Let's Get Dangerous!

Usually, DWs feathered fears come to life once per episode, which means he's only got one felon to fry at any given time. Well, in this NES game, Darkwing's in for septuple trouble. Seven sneaky scumfaced scoundrels are pilfering St. Canard's finest locales. To make a long story short, if Darkwing doesn't bag the crooks and throw them in the slammer, he's a duck outta luck!

DW takes on the first three villains, Quacker Jack, VMman, and the Liquidator, in any order. Quacker's fowling up the construction of a Bridge, so Darkwing must negotiate cranes, hooks, pulleys, buzzy beetles, and bats to track him down. Wolfman's haunt is Downtown, so watch out for the full moon's psycho effects! Liquidator's swiping valuables from the Underpass, and his sewer gators are a real crock for DW.

  • To avoid this rafter bat, jump towards it onto the next hook. Then quickly jump back to your original safe spot and let it fly by you.
  • This tortoise tenor is a snap to defeat Wait HI it nods its head rapidly. Then leap over its shell and shoot the turtle with a few Gas bursts.
  • You can't get rid of these pesky clown ducks. Shoot to stun, then leap over them and hightail it outta there. Next, Darkwing takes his pick from three more loony goonies -- Brushroot, MegaVolt, and Moliarty. Brushroot is holed up in the Woods outside of town. MegaVolt's thieving duck thugs are robbing warehouses along the Wharf, and Moliarty's taken over a Tower high-rise. If DW dispatches that trio, he'll take on the last and the worst on his hit list -- Steel Beak and Beak's F.O.W.L floating fortress.
  • Duck-eating plant traps abound in the Forest Deal with it, Darkwing. Jump forward and nail the stem. Leap back and dodge the petal. Then move in and do it again.
  • To knock off these crew-cut machine gunners, which appear late in the game, hang from a hook when they open fire. Jump down and blast off a few shots. Then return to your safety hook and repeat the process.
  • Darkwing despises these cheap imitation, evil, caped ducks. To take 'em down, stand still and block their fire with the DW Cape. Then do the Gas thing.
  • Be sure to grab this Heart Briefcase before you take on Moliarty!

Plucking DW

Darkwing TV show fans will freak over the sharp, colorful graphics. Even our hero's oversized floppy hat and flashy outfits are intact! You'll even recognize the theme song, sorta.

Much like his Disney video game predecessors, Darkwing's game is great action entertainment. The gameplay's solid, and the Challenge is set for intermediate gamers. A two-player option, like in Chip 'n Dale, would have been appreciated. But, hey, those are the breaks. Capcom usually leads the charge into NES gaming fun, and Darkwing makes his move with flying colors!

Let's get dangerous you say? No problemo, Disney Afternoon buffs, Capcorn's bringing Darkwing Duck, sidekick Launchpad McQuack, and the whole cast of DW characters to the NES. This game is bound to please fans of nonviolent, family-oriented titles, such as Chip 'N Dale's Rescue Rangers and Little Nemo: The Dream Master.

Trouble's everywhere for our rico suave, Duck-on-the-prowl. Trying to preserve his vigilante-of-the-night reputation and of course his debonair appearance, Darkwing swoops out of the shadows to nab the F.O.W.L mobsters who are putting the clamp on St. Canard. Villains, such as Brushroot, Quacker Jack, Steel Beak, and Darkwing's arch-enemy -- MegaVolt, are also making a name for themselves in this crime game. When there's trouble, call DW! "The terror that flaps in the night" is on his way.

The city of St. Canard is suddenly gripped by a terrifying crime wave. The top secret organization known as S.H.U.S.H. suspects the F.O.W.L. group of this travesty of justice.

You are Darkwing Duck, a special agent sent to seek out the agents of F.O.W.L. and stop this problem. This faithful translation of the NES version puts you right in the middle of the worst parts of St. Canard.

Launchpad McQuack will fly Darkwing to various locations on a map to seek out the crime bosses and put a stop to their reign of terror. Use a high powered gun to blast these enemies or unfurl your cloak to shield yourself from oncoming assaults.

Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of ducks? Darkwing Duck knows! He's the hottest crime-busting bird in the Turbo-dimension. In this action adventure for one, you join Disney's Darkwing Duck and his fine feathered friends, Gosalyn and Muddlefoot, on a crime-solving mission to foil the evil designs of the fiendish terrorist group, F.O.W.L This wretched flock has slashed a valuable painting and hidden the bits all over the city of St. Canard. You must beat the bad guys, find the pieces of the painting, and restore the priceless masterpiece. Can the Caped Quacker and his spiffy Gas Gun put an end to this madness? Or, will his goose be cooked? Take a "quack" at Darkwing Duck and find out all about it.

Something smells foul in St. Canard. A fiendish fivesome, who call themselves "F.O.W.L," have slashed a valuable painting and hidden the pieces all over the city. This masterpiece abuse has something to do with an ultimate weapon. If Darkwing Duck doesn't recover the stolen painting, his goose is cooked!

Criminals of a Feather

This TurboGrafx-16 duck hunt takes Darkwing through five short, verticalty-and horizontally-scrolling missions. The task at "wing" is to gather up the pieces of the painting and give the leading members of FO.W.L. (Steel Beak, Moliar-ty, Tuskemini, Megavolt, and Ratcatcher) and their cohorts a good thrashing. Conquer one of the FO.W.L. fowlies and DD enters a puzzle sequence. Once inside the puzzle, he tries to fit the newfound pieces together by sliding them around inside a frame.

Although the F.O.W.L. goons are menacing in a goofy, Disney sort of way, in an "eggshell," their bark is far worse than their bite. It's a given that they'll take a few notches off your life meter, but they're not so rough-and-tumble that your thumbs start sweating. To restore his life meter, DD only needs to grab eggs he finds along the way.

Great Graphics, Flighty Game Play

The graphics and sound are both razor sharp, much like DD's popular Disney cartoon. The game, however, can be methodical. If you're a gamester in a huiry, you'd better look elsewhere.

DD gets the Clark Gable debonair award for his stylish threads. Sporty? No doubt! However, there are moments when you'd gladly chuck in the glad rags for one pair of working wings! DD's no flyboy and that takes its toll. What Darkwing can do is jump, duck, and shoot his Gas Gun with ease.

The obstacle courses in each Mission, which DD must go up, over, and through, are likely to bust your brain cells. There's a sizeable number of floating platforms and feather-raising jumps, from one tiny ledge to another. These require very meticulous timing. Slip up a wee bit and Darkwing eats dirt.

Quack Attack

Darkwing Duck's a grand translation of this very cool Disney character. DD's a looker with smooth moves. In the Minor Gripe Department, this isn't the speediest of action carts. DD's more of a take-a-chance adventure. Much of the time, you don't quite know where you're going to land when you leap, but you gotta' go for it anyway. Overall, you wouldn't go wrong winging it with Darkwing Duck.

ProTips:

  • Some jumps between platforms are tricky. The best approach is to get as close to the edge as possible and jump early.
  • There's a time limit. If you need time to contemplate your plan of action, hit the Pause button. If you don't and you wait too long, an anvil comes crashing down and Rattens DO into a "quacker."
  • Hint Does the Mona-Ouckette mean anything to you? Think about it when you're trying to piece together the sliding-puzzle.
