Fairy Fencer F: Refrain Chord

Fairy Fencer F: Refrain Chord is a turn-based strategy game with RPG elements. The game features anime style artwork with a variety of different characters. The story is based around Fang, a boy seeking to help resurrect his Goddess and save the planet.

He is not alone. Fang has the help of two muses, one who can brainwash those around her with her song, and one who can save people with her singing. He also has a sword known as a fury, and the help of other faeries.

Several Possible Endings

The game responds to user choices throughout the plot. There are several possible endings that can occur, depending on which choices are made. These choices add to replay value, since you can play the game several times to see what different choices can be made.

Unique Gameplay Experience

In the original Fairy Fencer F, the game engine was based off of Hyperdimension Neptunia's battle system. The game has since developed into its own unique experience, and has been redone to be completely unique. The new gameplay system has some unique features. Fang may be put on one of several different maps, and each of these maps features things like boggy ground or high ground. The location you are on in the map can change how you play.

Characters can get stuck on boggy ground or get a buff from areas that have an advantage. Fang must use the land itself to his advantage in order to help him win the game.

On top of this, his muses which can buff his characters or cause harm to the enemies are AoE based—and it doesn’t matter who is in the circle. They will all be affected. Fang must be careful to make sure he doesn’t accidentally buff the enemy or brainwash his friends.

The result is an interesting dynamic that adds a few levels of finesse to the game. Players really need to think about their location and actions to make sure the results will be favorable for them.

Treasure Hunting

The game also offers another feature to the game, where Fang can dig for buried treasure using his sword. By stabbing the fury into the ground in various locations, he can find lost artifacts, faeries, or hidden locations. Furies have a limited amount of locate energy, but players can make it go farther by activating chains.

This game shows a lot of promise, but early reviews from players who have played other games in this series are mixed. Most of them are disappointed in that as of this writing, there is no English Dub in the game. Others are disappointed in Fang’s abrasive personality, but Fang develops through the course of the game, and has acted this way in the past as well.
