Get ready to immerse yourself in a world of unparalleled relaxation and beautiful girls with The Dreamland, a game explicitly designed to have as much of a good time as one possibly can. Bring peace to an idyllic village and restore the natural order, all while you enjoy the game's gorgeous vistas and exotic locations.
As enjoyable of a game as The Dreamland can be, there's a certain air of "solitude" that permeates the whole experience. In the end, this is one of those experiences that will only appeal to a very small, rather niche set of gaming enthusiasts. Be warned, your mileage with this game might vary.
RPG Combat
Despite the game marketing itself as a sort of social paradise where you just enjoy a relaxing time by the beach enjoying the company of some gorgeous ladies, The Dreamland hides at its core a surprisingly complex RPG game. However, don't come in expecting Final Fantasy VII levels of complexity in this game.
As much as there is some RPG DNA injected into some of the core values of The Dreamland, they are as far from perfect as possible. Myriad glitches and other oddities mar the title, including enemies that don't react at all and laughably easy encounters. Long story short, The Dreamland is not a vastly competent RPG.
Tropical Paradise
Sure, the core RPG mechanics of the game are busted, but what about the visuals? Well, that's a different story altogether. While not on the same technical prowess as something like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, The Dreamland still manages to paint a rather pretty picture with its luscious environments and diverse dreamlike landscapes.
That said, while there might be a definite attempt at a visual style in this game, it lies hidden under dozens of lifeless Unity assets and uninspired map design. It's a shame, really: with a bit more care put into it, it's clear that The Dreamland could achieve so much more than it does at the moment.
Constant Evolution
It's not all bad news for The Dreamland. The developers seem fairly preoccupied with the progress of this title, with constant content updates bringing the experience closer to what the game should have been since its launch.
The addition of new characters and locations, not to mention the refinements made to multiple gameplay elements, showcases just how much of a passion project The Dreamland really is.
It will take some time before I could fully recommend this game to every type of player out there. As it is now, I'm sure there will be plenty of players who might find the experience charming and perhaps even endearing. However, I'm sure the game will become so much better in due time.
The Dreamland has its fair share of gameplay and visual issues, but deep at its core lies the blueprint for a rather addictive and entertaining RPG experience.
