It seems like everyone is getting into the game of visual novels. There are romances on almost every topic under the sun, and with almost every kind of character. Now you have the option to get in on some finger lickin’ good action with “Hot” Colonel Sanders in this KFC visual romance novel.
In this game, you are a student at a culinary academy, with the single goal of making Colonel Sanders fall in love with you. You can go back and make other choices if you made a poor decision, and there are a couple of quick games to break up the story line.
Apart from this, falling in love with the chicken man feels a lot like falling in love with the literal pigeons you can date in Hatoful Boyfriend. If this is your kind of deal, Sanders is ready to reveal a little thigh in “I Love You, Colonel Sanders!”
A game where nothing makes sense
As an advertisement designed to try and appeal to the internet crowd, this game probably isn’t meant to be taken seriously. It is packed full of chaos, chat speak, internet jokes, and general silliness. Nothing makes sense in the game, and the only serious or straight forward parts involve the ones where you are romancing Hot Colonel Sanders. (There are no other hot characters in the game. The only character you are interested in or labeled as attractive is Sanders. Don’t even think about another plot option.)
This game has only one plot, and that plot is very flat, but despite this the game ends up being relatively entertaining. All of the characters are over the top, and everyone is insane enough to make you believe there are people out there who want to date the KFC mascot.
Despite the blandness of the plot, there is a bright spot to this game. The artwork is very well done, and the mini games are light but functional. In one game you need to answer rapid fire questions under a time limit, and in another it has combat.
Surface level fun
The game’s biggest problem is that it only scratches the surface of what a visual novel should be. In the game, it’s not at all hard to guess what will get Colonel Sanders to fall in love with you, but much harder to take away anything deeper from the game.
This game was designed for the purpose of selling chicken, and it shows. Jokes fall flat, romance between you and Sanders is all but forced on you, and everything else is cliché. If you want to be sold chicken for “multiple hours” you may enjoy this advertisement/game, but otherwise, you’re better off falling in love with pigeons in Hatoful Boyfriend.
Despite this, the game has a lot of positive ratings on Steam, in part because it is just so fun to spoof the whole KFC theme. Most of the positive reviews are as funny and chaotic as the game itself, and not meant to be taken seriously either.
