The visual novel world is one of the most varied and biggest game genres out there. Not only because they are really popular and have a big fanbase, but also because they are easy to make. That makes them really popular in the indie scene, and Hatoful Boyfriend is one of the most original ones out there.
Let's keep in mind that Hatoful Boyfriend isn't only a visual novel, but it is also a dating sim game and quite an original one. Even though it started as a flash game released on April Fool's Day in 2011. But as it gained some popularity, little by little it became a real, full-blown game. Well, that is if we can even call this one a "real" game… But let's talk a little bit about it now.
About the game
Before we start talking about what this game is all about, keep in mind that it all started, and continued to be one an April Fool’s Day game. So, with that out of the way, we can now get started with what this Hatoful Boyfriend is all about.
It all starts out just like any other dating sim out there, it all seems pretty normal. You play as a young girl starting her second year at the institute. But you shouldn’t be expecting to find any usual experience like going out with your friends, riding bikes, going on vacations or any of that. The world is now dominated by birds, and you are the only human around and you’re out to find your true love, which would obviously have to be a bird.
Aside from all the talking birds around, the dialogues are pretty normal, and there’s a lot of socializing involved. You can think of it as the social element in the Persona game series, only that this time it will be with birds.
The whole theme of the game is very simple, and the fact that you're actually dating these birds makes it impossible to take seriously at all, to begin with. There are plenty of solid dialogues and character development. Even though these characters are talking birds, they really behave like humans, so you can even forget you're talking with birds all the time…NOT.
Hatoful Boyfriend is tough to review since it isn't meant to be a serious game, but there's a lot of elements in there you'd expect to see in a serious visual novel. The dating sim elements are all there, and there are tons of dialogues and different birds you can date.
There are plenty of interactions and it's fun to see how they vary depending on your choices. However, Hatoful Boyfriend is lacking a lot of the elements that make up for a good dating sim, and the humor gets boring really fast.
It is supposed to be really fun, but they rely too heavily on the "talking birds" joke, and you get over that one really fast. Aside from that, the comedic element is really weak unless you are in a great mood, otherwise, it can even be cringe-worthy. Like any dating Sim, Hatoful Boyfriend is meant to be replayed many times. That way you'll get to see different dialogues, more character development, and different storylines.
One thing’s for sure, it is the best bird-dating sim out there. Not to mention it is probably the only one.
