This may not apply to everyone but picture the scene with us. As a kid you head out to your aunt’s house in the countryside every summer. You ride your bikes, you stay up late roasting marshmallows over campfires and you spend day after day with no responsibilities and no cares in the world. In short, it’s the most wholesome and happy time of your life. Well, imagine you return as an adult after over a decade away from your childhood haven. Well, in Summer Memories, that’s exactly what happens and as you can imagine, the dynamic has changed drastically.
This game plays like other visual novels within this genre such as Scars of Summer, Sylphy and the Sleepless Island, Idol Manager, Chasing Tails and Nekopara. This is a game that combines a childhood fondness, adds a hefty dose of mature themes and invites the player to experience a unique story. However, is this a game worth investing your time into? We find out in our review of Summer Memories.
A Blast From the Past
Let’s begin with his this game is presented. Summer Memories is a game that is basically an interactive anime story. The game uses photo realistic environments and then hand drawn anime style character models and assets. Then as for the UI. It’s all very bold and brash and vibrant, as you would expect from a Japanese style visual novel. However, none of this is a criticism. It ticks all the boxes that it needs to, the visuals and animations are on point and each character is distinct enough that this feel unique in its own right. So visually this game is good.
Gameplay is also surprisingly good too. You would expect this to be text based with some multiple choice and maybe some secret endings at the end. Well, Summer Memories has all that. However, it also has a series of fun mini games that work in the context of the story to keep things light and keep players engaged on the game through interactive segments. Don’t get us wrong, this isn’t Breath of the Wild gameplay mechanics here, but in this genre anything is a bonus and we appreciate this.
Then lastly, we have the story. This game offers a very well-told story that doesn’t just use the plot to introduce smut. The XXX content is contextual, used sparingly and plays second fiddle to the overarching plot which makes the player care about those they meet in game. Which in turn, makes all the more mature content all the more poignant. The writing is super, the characters are deep and overall, we are impressed.
Overall, Summer Memories is not just your run of the mill visual novel. It is one that looks the part, offers varied gameplay that extends beyond picking choice one or two. Plus, the game has a gripping story that will keep the player engaged for hours. If this were a physical book, it would be a real page turner.
The only thing we will say is that the sound quality is average and the games offered can become tedious. However, as a sum of its parts, Summer Memories is a super game and well worth a try.
