I played the Japanese demo for Wing of Darkness a while back and have been following the game ever since. This is an action-packed shooter with girls and mechs and it ticked many of the boxes for what I am looking for in an action game. It is making its way to Steam and I thought now was the perfect time to try and get some more eyes on this game.
The Story Of A Mech And A Girl
The story of Wing of Darkness has a real action/sci-fi movie type of deal and I got a real kick out of it if I am being honest with you. There are these flying objects that are known as Blankers that have appeared and are causing chaos all over the world. The only thing that can stop them is the powerful Held System.
Only a select few brave women are able to pilot the Held System which is basically a mech. The whole chick in a mech saving the world storyline was something that I thought was a great deal of fun and I was also surprised at just how story-driven this game turned out to be.
Wowzers That Sure Is Pretty
I was very, very impressed with the visuals of Wing of Darkness. While the Held System, cut scenes, girls, and enemies all look great. It was the various areas that you are fighting over that really impressed me. From snow-covered mountains, the forest, a futuristic city, and more. There is a lot of variety to the locations in this game and the fine details are very impressive. This game also features a rocking and kickass soundtrack that I felt helped get me all jacked up and ready to take on these SOBs!
Fluid Controls = Sweaty Palms
The controls of Wing of Darkness are great. This is a bit of a mixture of different styles, but there are three games that I feel this compares to and they are Star Fox, Panzer Dragoon, and Ace Combat. This is a very arcade-style game so if flight sims do not do it for you, do not worry.
I love how fast-paced it is and the controls feel great. You can move quickly to evade danger and you have a great selection of firepower at your disposal. The game is not exactly difficult, even on the higher difficulties, but that does not affect the fun.
Prepping Your Held System
You have a bit of choice in regards to the kind of firepower you have. You can select your primary, secondary and special weapon before a mission, and having a play around is a lot of fun. Certain missions will be easier with a certain loadout. If this sounds a tad complicated, do not worry, you can just press a button and the game will select the most accessible loadout for that mission.
I am pretty shocked that Wing of Darkness has not gotten more attention. This is a badass and balls to the wall kind of shooter that is just a ton of fun to play. It is one of those games that is very addictive due to how great the controls are. I know it may be a tad on the easy side, but the accessibility of it just means that anyone can jump in and have fun with this game.
