Orion Sandbox Enhanced

Talk about a blast from the past, Orion Sandbox Enhanced is a game I came across by complete random as I was looking for something super cheap to play. When I saw this, I was struck by a real feeling of familiarity, not just because this is clearly a take on a popular 2D survival game, but because I remember this being a pretty big deal and very popular as a flash game, so when I saw it, I knew I had to check this out, and I ended up having a lot of fun with it.

Stating The Obvious!

Ok, we need to get this out of the way, and that is the fact that Orion Sandbox Enhanced is not the most original game out there. This is as close to Terraria without being called that as you can get, and to be honest, this is not as good as that game. However, the game is a fun time, and if you were someone who played the heck out of this during its flash days, it is awesome how it has been preserved like this, and now you can actually add it to your game collection and play it without the need to be connected to the internet in order to do so.

A Strange Far-Off Planet!

There is not a ton of story going on here, and if I am being brutally honest, it is pretty standard, but it is still kind of fun. We play the role of a little guy (or gal) who is heading off into outer space on a rescue mission, only as we get close to the planet, we crash, and now we must do all that we can in order to survive. It is fun stuff, and if we are being real, you do not need a story running through a game like this, but there are hints and little bits of lore around if you do want to dive a little deeper.

Working And Playing

It is just like Terraria is the easiest way to describe to someone what the gameplay of Orion Sandbox Enhanced is all about. This is a 2D survival game where you need to look for supplies, and on the surface, you can find stuff like wood and stone, but you can also dive deep into the ground, explore dungeons, and find better resources that let you craft better weapons and other cool stuff. There is a neat quest system here, so you do not feel like you are just doing random stuff, looking for resources, and there are boss battles and lots of hidden stuff too. It is very easy to see why this was so popular as a flash game, as it has a ton of content. There is actually a generation of people who grew up playing this while they were at school that have a ton of fun, and I guess now, nostalgia for this game, and I think that is pretty cool. When I was a kid at school, the only gaming I could sneak in during class was on my terrible WWF superstars game and watch!

Keeping The Pixels At Home

At first glance, you may think that even the visuals of Orion Sandbox Enhanced have just knocked off Terraria as well. But that is not exactly the case. Sure, the game has a 2D style, it has a green above world and a dark dungeon world underneath. However, Terraria is known for its really cool and charming pixel art, but this game goes for something a little bit different. The game has a much smoother kind of 2D look to it, more detailed characters and environments, and I think this works to its advantage, as it is very charming. The character creation stuff is a great deal of fun, as there are many ways you can design your character. I ended up looking like some kind of knight.

Orion Sandbox Enhanced is a sandbox game in a two-dimensional world. You have an entire planet at your disposal, which is open to adventure and inglorious death somewhere in the depths of the dungeons. Side-scrolling and pixelated design create a cozy atmosphere for building, farming, and mass murder. Create your own cozy little nest, farm ore for armor and weapons, do whatever you want in the vast world of Orion.
