Playstation 2 Games

Editor's Choice

The very best PlayStation 2 games are waiting for you here! This incredible console is home to some of the biggest and best video game series of all time, and you can find them all in this epic collection.

GTA Series

Truth be told, you could highlight any of the Grand Theft Auto games on PlayStation 2, and you would be onto a winner. This is where the series made the jump to a full 3D open world, and while the first two games were fantastic in their own way, the massive leaps that Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas made cannot be overlooked. What is so great about this series on PS2 is that each game offers a unique and incredible story with unforgettable characters.

God of War Series

While the brutal adventures of Kratos have changed over the last couple of games, all of the initial blood that Kratos spilled over Greece happened on the PlayStation 2! The God of War series, like many other iconic game series, started on the PS2! With so many great games on the console, you know that God of War II has to be something very special as it constantly appears on best games on PlayStation 2 lists!

Resident Evil Series

The Resident Evil series was very well represented on the PlayStation 2. One game that deserves special attention is Resident Evil 4. This game had extra content on the PS2 and was easily the best version you could play! In addition to the epic fourth game, The PlayStation 2 would also get some of the more interesting Resident Evil spin-offs as well, not to forget an epic port of Resident Evil: Code Veronica X!

Final Fantasy Series

When it comes to the best RPGs on the PS2, the Final Fantasy series has to be talked about. Final Fantasy X was a huge deal, offering a massive adventure with incredible graphics, movie like cutscenes, and voice acting for the first time in a main-line game. Not only would it get a direct sequel. The PlayStation 2 would also get more Final Fantasy games, including one that would bring the world of MMORPGs to the PS2!

Metal Gear Series

While the Metal Gear Solid series was brought back to life on the original PlayStation, it would be the PS2 that would truly take the franchise to new heights. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater would be a PS2 exclusive and truly take this epic spy action series into the world of being like an interactive movie! When it comes to Metal Gear, the PS2 has some of the best games that the franchise has to offer.

Gran Turismo Series

Another iconic PlayStation series that would improve on the PlayStation 2 was the Gran Turismo series. There would be a few games released for the PS2, but the hype around Gran Turismo 3 was truly something special. It offers visuals like we could only dream of and tons of real and iconic cars to race as. To this day, many people consider the PS2 the generation where Gran Turismo peaked!

Kingdom Hearts Series

Another beloved RPG series that would get its start on the PlayStation 2 is the Kingdom Hearts series. While that first game, which mixed Final Fantasy characters with Disney characters, was amazing, it would be Kingdom Hearts 2 that would go on to be regarded as one of the best RPGs on the PlayStation 2. With an incredible story and a vast number of iconic characters, the Kingdom Hearts series is still going strong to this day!

Ratchet & Clank Series

Granted, you could make the argument that the Ratchet & Clank series would go on to bigger and better things, but the Ratchet & Clank trilogy (and the spin-offs) on PlayStation 2 are some of the best 3D action games the console has to offer. The original Ratchet & Clank Series was a true game changer for Sony and these characters would go on to become PlayStation icons. With their quirky stories, insane weapons, and lovable characters, all of these games are must-play on the PS2.

Jak and Daxter Series

One of the best PlayStation 2 series has to be the Jak and Daxter series! This series is currently stuck on the PS2 with no new games, but do not worry, as these are all fantastic games. With a really cool sci-fi action setting, great characters, and amazing gameplay, each game offers a great experience. However, many fans feel that Jak 2, with its darker tone and large open world, is the best in the series.

Devil May Cry Series

Here we have another epic series that started on the PlayStation 2, Devil May Cry. Playing as the half demon half angel badass that is Dante, each of these games offers hack-and-slash action that rivals the best the genre has to offer. The first two games in the series are fantastic. However, Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening is not only the best DMC game on PS2; many would argue that it is one of the best PlayStation 2 games ever!

Dragon Quest Series

The PS2 is home to some of the best RPGS ever made, and the Dragon Quest series is one of the most popular. There are many people who say that Dragon Quest VIII is not only the best Dragon Quest game but it is also one of the best games on PlayStation 2! This series is known for its epic fantasy adventures, fun and engaging combat, and incredible character designs from the legendary Akira Toriyama.

Prince of Persia Series

While it has been around since the 80s, the Prince of Persia series was given a fresh coat of paint during the PS2 era. The console would see a tremendous trilogy of games that started with the incredible Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. These took the classic 2D series and turned it into one of the best 3D action platformers of its day. All three games are fantastic, so be sure to play the entire trilogy from start to end!

Burnout Series

The thing with the Burnout series on PlayStation 2 is that each of the games in the series is great in its own way. While you are in for a fun and very “crashy” time with all of the games, Burnout Revenge is the one that most people say is their favorite. No matter if you are racing one of the cool looking cars or if you are just trying to cause as much damage as possible in the crash mode, you are in for a super fun time here.

Soul Calibur Series

When it comes to 3D fighting games on the PlayStation 2, you truly are spoiled for choice. However, the weapons based action of the Soul Calibur series is hard to top. What makes this series so great on the PS2 is that the console got an exclusive game in Soul Calibur 3. The PlayStation 2 is the only console that would see the third game in the series make its way home and it is a ton of fun!

Onimusha Series

Capcom showed the PS2 a ton of love, and one of their best franchises on the console was the Onimusha series. This game would see several entries, all of which have you playing as a samurai as you lay waste to demons! All of the games are fun, and the series should be played in order, however, Capcom pulled out all the stops with the epic, Onimusha 3: Demon Siege, which is like you are playing a part in a big budget Hollywood action movie!

Katamari Series

If you love quirky and weird games, they do not get more quirky and weird than the Katamari series. The PlayStation 2 is actually where this Namco series started, so we feel that there is no better place to start than with the original Katamari Damacy. Play as the Prince as you roll around and smash all the objects together in a game that is so crazy, you have to play it to appreciate its weirdness.

Persona Series

The Persona series has become one of the premier RPG franchises in the world. Originally starting as an offshoot of the Shin Megami Tensei series, Persona is now even more well-known than that! The PS2 has some amazing Persona games, but we feel that Shin Megami Tensei Persona 3 FES is the best place to start. Play as a high school student, trying to stop the world from ending. This edition features extra content and a playable female protagonist!

Yakuza Series

One of the best game series that started on the PlayStation 2 is the Yakuza series from Sega. The leap from the original game to Yakuza 2 is massive. These games are known for their epic storytelling, hard hitting combat, and perhaps a few quirky things, too. While the series would go on to bigger and better things, these original games on the PS2 are still fantastic to play, especially if you want to see the origins of the series.
