Konami’s answer to the incredibly popular FIFA series, Pro Evolution Soccer has always taken a more realistic and graphically impressive stance when it comes to its yearly releases. The same applies for Pro Evolution Soccer 2011. Where PES 2010 was criticized for failing to innovate and bring new ideas to the table, Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 is considered by many to be the first real modern PES game that set the standard for years to come.
Fans of FIFA, Pro Evolution Soccer, and even fans of NBA will enjoy the realistic sport gameplay found in PES 11.
He Shoots, He Scores
Picking up the controller, players will instantly feel the improvements in moment-to-moment gameplay in PES 2011 over previous interactions.
Passing the ball is no longer an automatic and magnetized operation, and players need to combine their kicking power and direction to get the ball to where they want it to go. This adds a tremendous amount of control over the ball, giving players a huge amount of flexibility when it comes to tactics and strategies.
Player animations have also improved significantly, which saw PES’ first real step into the realistic football sim that it would be known as in later years. Movement and player reactions feel authentic and lifelike, while the commentary lacks the same sort of impact seen in FIFA.
Ways to Play
Utilizing multiple officially-licensed tournaments, Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 has many different cups and gamemodes for players to sink their teeth into. Players can take control of their favourite teams and take part in the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Europa League, as well as the UEFA Super Cup and Copa Libertadores, which were featured in the series for the first time during PES 2011.
Of course, most of players’ time will be spent in the Become A Legend and Master League modes. The online Master League was the most addictive of all the game’s content, with a mixture of risk and reward, as well as an online marketplace that ebbs and flows with demand. However, as of the 29th January 2013, the online services were discontinued, so players can’t use the online portion any more.
Offside!
Older PES games have struggled to match the same degree of officially licensed teams as FIFA, and unfortunately PES 11 is no different. While the game does add a slew of real life times from Bolivia, Argentina and Mexico through the Copa Libertadores, there are only 2 British premier league teams available. And while Manchester United is a great team to have licenced, there probably aren’t too many people jumping to play Tottenham Hotspur.
Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 is the first in the series to really make strides towards a game of the modern era. Utilizing more responsive and granular controls, the game steps out of the shadow cast by FIFA and makes its first strides towards its own unique identity. While the lack of licensed teams is a bit of a blow, the gameplay alone makes PES 11 the most superior football game of 2010 on a purely technical level.
PROS:
- Great level of control over players and movement of the ball
- Great graphics and realistic animations
- More mechanics, customization and added teams
CONS:
- Suffers from a lack of licensed teams
- Online portion is dead and inaccessible to current players
- Commentary is boring and lifeless
