Pro Evolution Soccer, often shortened to just PES, is the first game in Konami’s hugely successful PES video game series that has had new games release every year since the original came out in 2001. If you’ve played any of the modern soccer games and are keen to take a trip down memory lane to where it all began, then be sure to download Pro Evolution Soccer and give it a go.
Though the graphics are outdated, and the mechanics aren’t on par with the modern iterations of the game, PES still offers a fantastic retro gaming experience that fans of both the PES and Fifa games are sure to appreciate. Let’s take a look at some of the features of PES 2001.
Bird’s-eye view gameplay
Pro Evolution Soccer gives you a bird’s-eye view of the pitch, allowing you to see everything that’s going on around the player you’re controlling. This is much the same as what you’d expect from an official soccer broadcast on TV, but you actually get to control the characters now too!
The gameplay is also such that you’re always in control of the character on your team that has the ball. Whenever you pass the ball to a teammate, you then get to control that teammate through a seamless transition. This means you can set up elaborate plays without having to rely on a CPU to deliver the finishing shot.
The different game modes on offer
Pro Evolution Soccer has a few different game modes available for you to take advantage of. If you’re looking to just play a quick casual game by yourself or with a friend, then you can hop into Match Mode and get started right away. However, if you’re looking for more of a challenge, League Mode and Cup Mode have got you covered. These modes are more intricate and will involve competing against various teams either in a league format or cup format. If you’re committed and think you have what it takes to win, then be sure to give these modes a try.
There’s also a practice mode available, so don’t feel like you need to jump straight into a game if you’d rather take some time to get to know the controls.
Teams from around the world
PES gives you a lot of options when it comes to the team you want to play as, which is great for delivering a more personalized gaming experience. There are both club teams and national teams, all with varying offensive and defensive stats, so have a look around and choose the one you like. Chances are your home country will be in there too, so why not select them!
Pro Evolution Soccer was praised for its innovative mechanics when it was first released back in 2001. Though modern soccer games outshine it in every way now, PES still holds a deserved place in video game history as a fantastic sports game that paved the way for a long line of incredible sequels. Be sure to check this one out sometime.
