Editor's Choice
You will find no better collection of Sega Genesis games than right here! You can decide if it is true that Genesis does what Nintendon’t! From a super fast blue hedgehog, an ass-kicking ex-cop trying to clean up the streets, and much more. All of your favorite Sega games and characters can be found right here.
Streets of Rage Series
When it comes to the Sega Genesis, the Streets of Rage Series is one of the most beloved series of games on that system! All three games are fantastic and tell the story of a group of vigilantes kicking the ass of a gang that is trying to take over their city. The beat-em-up gameplay is practically perfect and Streets of Rage 2 in particular is seen as one of the best games on the Sega Genesis. As well as kicking ass and being fun, the series is also known for its epic soundtrack.
Shinobi Series
If you are a Sega fan you are no doubt a huge fan of the epic Shinobi Series. What started out as an arcade game would make its way onto the Sega Master System, but it was on the Sega Genesis with titles such as Shadow Dancer and Shinobi 3 where the series really took off. Shinobi would be reinvented many times on systems such as the Sega Saturn, the PlayStation 2 and the Nintendo 3DS! This series offers far more awesome ninja games than many people realize!
Contra Games
Ok, granted, when it comes to Sega Genesis Games, the Contra Games series is probably not the first thing that comes to mind as this series is more associated with Nintendo! However, the incredible Contra: Hard Corps which was a Sega Genesis exclusive game is one of the best games in the entire franchise and well worth checking out if you want to see what the Sega Genesis can really do.
Sonic Download
When it comes to Sega, the Sonic Games are the thing that 99.99 percent of people will think of first. With four (five if you count Sonic 3 with Sonic & Knuckles attached) main games and numerous spin-offs. Sonic on the Sega Genesis is what made the Sega Genesis take off the way that it did! Sonic is not only the Sega mascot, he is easily one of the most recognizable and iconic video game characters of all time and many will argue that the blue blur was at his best on the Sega Genesis!
Aladdin Games
Trust us when we tell you, that you aint ever played a game like this! There are actually a bunch of awesome Aladdin Games, but when it comes to the classic games featuring Aladdin, the Sega Genesis Aladdin is the one most people think of. This was a game changer back in the day thanks to the fantastic visuals that looked just like the movie which were actually animated by Disney themselves! When it comes to the best Sega Genesis Games in the platformer genre, Aladdin is part of that conversation!
The Jungle Book Games
Forget flying carpets and lion cubs that just can’t wait to be king for a second! While The Jungle Book Games do not get as much attention as other Disney Games. There are some fantastic games based on this Disney classic, one of the best is right here on the Sega Genesis. Offering nice and fluid animation that looks just like the movie and way more level variety than you would expect from a licensed game. The Jungle Book for Sega Genesis is one heck of a hidden gem!
Batman Games
When it comes to superhero games on the Sega Genesis, the Dark Knight has a very interesting history. You could argue that the first of the Batman Games to be released for the Genesis is the best, it captures the look and feel of the Tim Burton 1989 movie perfectly! However, there is a lot of variety to the Batman Games on Genesis as one is more like a shooter, one is like a beat-em-up and another even has Batman and the Justice League fighting each other in a one-on-one fighter!
Street Fighter Series
The Street Fighter Series was very well represented on the Sega Genesis and the incredible version of Street Fighter II: Special Champion Edition is one of the best Sega Genesis Games when it comes to the fighting game genre. However, while that game is perhaps the one most people remember, Sega’s 16-bit powerhouse would also get a fantastic port of Super Street Fighter II which introduced four new characters to the franchise!
Terminator Games
You will 100 percent be saying “I’ll be back” after you have played one of the great Terminator Games that are available on the Sega Genesis. Ok, one may be less than great, but the other games based on Terminator are fantastic. Play through the first and second movies as you try to prevent Judgement Day from happening! There is also the incredible Robocop vs The Terminator game which has its best version right here on the Sega Genesis.
Golden Axe Games
During the early days of the Sega Genesis, there was one game that people were waiting for and this was before Sonic was a thing! Of course, we are talking about the fantasy beat-em-up, Golden Axe! However, there are actually three Golden Axe Games on the Sega Genesis, two of which were not based on an arcade game and were designed with the Sega Genesis in mind! If you love fantasy and badass beat-em-ups, it does not get much better than Golden Axe!
Phantasy Star Series
While there may have been no Final Fantasy Games for the Sega Genesis, the Genesis more than held its own when it came to RPGs! The Phantasy Star Series is the premier RPG series for the Sega Genesis. There are three games in the series for the 16-bit monster from Sega and they offer some of the most intense and massive gaming experiences that you can get on the Genesis!
Virtua Fighter Series
Granted, when you think of the Sega Genesis, the Virtua Fighter Series is probably not the first series that comes to mind. Yet, even after the Sega Saturn was released, the Genesis was popular enough that it got its very own version of Virtua Fighter 2! This is such a strange and unique release in the franchise and you can only play this 2D version here on the Sega Genesis.
Earthworm Jim Games
Ok, so the Earthworm Jim Games are not exclusive to the Sega Genesis, however, even the most die hard SNES fan has to admit that these games are better on the Sega Genesis. These are wacky action platformers that have a fantastic sense of humor. These two games are a blast, with so many fun characters and crazy situations! These are truly a product of the 90s and some of the best action games that the Sega Genesis has to offer.
ECCO the Dolphin Series
The Ecco the Dolphin Series offers some of the most memorable Sega Genesis Games that the console has to offer. The incredible visuals, the fact that the whole game takes place underwater, and that breathtaking musical score. Sure these two games are hard as nails, but there is just something about the Ecco games that make you want to keep on playing.
Gunstar Heroes Series
Granted, saying that there is a Gunstar Heroes Series bit of a stretch as it is really just one game that has been released countless times. However, when it comes to Sega Genesis exclusive games, there are not many that can match Gunstar Heroes! This was the first game that Treasure would release and even all these years later, it is a firm favorite for many people. You simply have not experienced the Sega Genesis unless you have played Gunstar Heroes!
Toejam & Earl Series
Sega actually had quite a few mascot style characters and Toejam & Earl were certainly Sega mascots during the Genesis era. The Toejam & Earl Series would get its start on the Genesis. One of the things that is really neat about the two Toejam & Earl games for the Genesis is that they honestly could not be any different from each other, while the gameplay is different, the zany and wacky vibes are present in both games!
Cult Classic Games
While there are many iconic games for the Sega Genesis. The Sega Genesis is also home to some real Cult Classic Games that really do flesh out the systems library in some very creative ways. If you are looking for something off the beaten path and a game that is not quite as well known when it comes to the Sega Genesis, these are the kind of games that you need to be checking out.
Run-and-Gun Games
When it comes to the 16-bit wars, the Sega Genesis truly had some of the best Run-and-Gun Games around. From the likes of Contra: Hard Corps to Gunstar Heroes, the Sega Genesis thanks to its incredible “BLAST PROCESSING” was able to have absolute mayhem on the screen. These are some of the best games that the system has to offer and arguably, the Genesis does this genre better than the other systems of the day.
Beat 'Em Up Games
The Beat 'Em Up Games genre is home to some of the best Sega Genesis games of all time! The three Streets of Rage games, especially part 2 are some of the best that the system has to offer. However, the likes of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Hyperstone Heist, Double Dragon, and Golden Axe to name a few show that the Genesis is not scared to throw a few roundhouse kicks and punches to the face your way!
Shoot 'Em Up Games
If there is one genre of games where the Genesis had the awesome SNES on the ropes it with its Shoot 'Em Up Games. With such epic shooters like Thunder Force IV and Musha. The Sega Genesis really does have some of the best shoot 'em ups that the 16-bit era has to offer. If you love shooters and want a challenge, the Sega Genesis is the console for you!
