For a long time rhythm games were all the hype, especially for just how fun they are, and accessible for such a wide audience. Whether you're playing them just to have some fun with friends and chilling or whether you're a hardcore competitive player. Anyone can play, but it takes special dedication to be a great player of these games, and Dance Dance Revolution X2 is an excellent example of this. Part of one of the most popular and maybe the best rhythm-game franchises in the world, Dance Dance Revolution X2 is one to keep an eye on, so let's see what it's all about!

About the game

Dance Dance Revolution X2 is the 12th entry in the series, as released in North America for the PS2 in 2009 it contained a much-updated playlist available for the player. Now even though most likely we are all pretty much used to the nature of this franchise. But just in case you're wondering, we'll go through a quick overview of how this game works.

Dance Dance Revolution X2 has the same basis as to all the other games in the franchise. The player uses a Dance Dance Revolution Mat, also commonly known as dance pads, as a controller. These consist of a pad you put on the floor and have arrow controllers just like a D-Pad, and some extra buttons. Using your feet, you step on the arrows as they roll out on screen getting in sync with the music and the visual indications that appear on the screen. These pads are made to resemble those you'd find in a Dance Dance Revolution arcade machine of course.

So that covers the basics, and those are about the same for every game in this franchise, as it's meant to make the dance pads compatible with as many entries in the series as possible. Dance Dance Revolution X2 is the first entry in the series to be produced by Naoki Maeda, and he brought some changes to the series, starting here. To start off the song selection has changed quite a bit, instead of the usual couple dozen licensed songs, this time it was only 15 songs with licensed content used in the game roster. And they were cut down in an unusual way, which made the badly edited songs into short, odd versions of themselves. Aside from that, it has an excellent original soundtrack.

Rhythm Games

Dance Dance Revolution was one of the most popular franchises in the rhythm game world, and you could argue it is the one that started the whole peripheral thing in which most rhythm games would go for the next few years. Franchises like Guitar Hero and Rock Band started making their way into the scene, eventually dominating it. These included peripherals to mimic instruments and even a microphone for singing. These games took it so far that they'd eventually end up making working instruments.

7.5

Dance Dance Revolution X2 is an interesting take on the franchise, following but it follows too closely the previous game Dance Dance Revolution X, and it ends up not innovating at all basically. However, it doesn't mean that it is a bad game at all, it's just not very original. If you like the franchise you'll surely love this one.

Pros

  • Great song selection
  • Solid gameplay
  • Nice interface

Cons

  • More or less the same as the previous game
  • Oddly edited licensed songs
