Developed by Harmonix and published by RedOctane, Guitar Hero became a phenomenon in the gaming industry. Its popularity ushered the entire genre of rhythm gaming into household videogames. Released in 2005, the game was extremely well-received by fans and critics of its soundtrack, innovative gameplay, and also its unique guitar-shaped controller. Guitar Hero is a family-friendly game that can please anyone who is a fan of music and talent challenges.
Homemade Rockstars
The original Guitar Hero became a massive success because of its innovative guitar-shaped controller, but it convinced people to buy and master it because of its versatile soundtrack. The game had forty-seven songs from famous artists such as Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Sum 41, Jimi Hendrix, and countless others. While most of those songs weren’t the original master tracks, they were great covers, and the versatility of the setlist made old and young music fans happy.
This first entry of the franchise was the one that set up the foundations for most games of the genre. Players are offered two-game modes here, a single-player career mode and a multiplayer mode.
During career mode, players can create a fictional rockstar and earn currency, items, and cosmetics to customize their characters. As players advance through their journey, they start playing bigger and bigger venues and arenas, with higher rewards each time.
In multiplayer mode, players can play with a friend in search of high scores. Awkwardly enough, this mode has the music alternating between players instead of having both players playing the entire song.
Fret Away From Here
Guitar Hero became a critically acclaimed title, launching one of the most successful franchises of all time because it is simple and fun. This version lacks the party game aspect of future games, but it was extremely fun to master at first. Honestly, maybe it was better players learned to master the guitar controller through closed doors.
The gameplay revolves around a fretboard running towards the player in synch with the music. Players then have to sync the five-colored frets and strum them along the notes to earn points. Consecutive hits generate multipliers that allow for higher scores. And finally, the “Star Power” is a special effect that can be used to double the points the player earns through its duration. It can be acquired by hitting specific note sections during the songs.
Conclusion
Guitar Hero is an instant classic and truly a masterpiece that changed the rhythm game industry. It brought a new controller and an experience that was once only found in arcades into everyone’s home. One of the best things about it was the fact that you did not need to own a guitar in order to play the game, as you could also use a regular controller to play it.
If you enjoy franchises such as Rock Band, Dance Dance Revolution, and Rhythm Doctor, this is something you need to experience.
