When it comes to FIFA 14: Legacy Edition, you have to admire the big brass balls that EA has to release a game like this. I have to start by saying I am a massive FIFA fan, I have been since the days of the SNES and I have always preferred FIFA to PES. However, each year, people say that EA releases the same game over and over again. Fans of the series know that this is not actually true, but with the Legacy series it actually is and it is crazy that EA are getting away with this to this day on the Nintendo Switch!

FIFA Atmosphere

I have to start by telling you that FIFA 14: Legacy Edition is the same game as FIFA 13 which itself was the same game as FIFA 12! What EA means by Legacy Edition is that the game is exactly the same, but with new kits and rosters. The actual gameplay, game modes, graphics, and so on remain the exact same as they were before! If you are ok with this and do not mind just getting the roster update then more power to you. However, EA would actually release FIFA 15 Legacy Edition for the Nintendo 3DS the following year and that would be the last FIFA game to make it on the Nintendo 3DS.

Plenty Of Modes

To be fair, FIFA 14: Legacy Edition is stacked with game modes and is as full a FIFA experience as you would get on a console. My go to game mode in the FIFA series is always the career mode and here you get the same kind of fantastic career mode where you pick your team and try to lead them to glory. Making transfers, formation changes, and so on along the way. It is very addictive and a mode that I feel translates very well to a handheld console like the 3DS. You also have street football which is 5 vs 5 and a great deal of fun. Tournament’s mode is a lot of fun as you can take part in various football leagues and cups from all over the world. There is also a Be A Pro mode where you create your own player and try to lead them to glory.

The Jerky Game

As well as making sure that FIFA 14: Legacy Edition is stacked with game modes and is as close to a full FIFA offering as possible. EA also tried to do this with the gameplay too. This gives you all of the action that you could want and I think that they came very close to nailing it. The problem is the frame rate is not the best, I do think it is better than the first game, FIFA 12, but it can still be an issue from time to time. I think that the gameplay of FIFA translated fairly well to the small 3DS and once you get used to the kind of jerky gameplay, there is a lot of fun to have here. I do like how they tried to do a couple of fun gimmicks with the touch screen. Some are great like being able to play around with your team’s formation, substitutions, and so on. Others, like when you can actually use the touch screen to shoot do not work as well.

It has to be said that without a shadow of a doubt that FIFA 14; Legacy Edition is 100 percent a cash grab! However, at the end of the day, this is still a very competent football game that is way more feature packed than people give it credit for. I also think that it runs a tad better than the two games that came before it, but there are still some framerate issues. To be honest with you, you would probably not notice a massive difference between FIFA 12 all the way to FIFA 15 on the Nintendo 3DS. I have to say that the Nintendo 3DS FIFA games are not as bad as many people claim that they are.

Pros:

  • Career mode translates very well to the 3DS
  • It is stacked with teams and players
  • Being able to tinker with your team on the touchpad is good
  • They did try and cram a full FIFA game onto the 3DS

Cons:

  • It is basically the same game as the other three FIFA games on the 3DS
  • The gameplay still suffers from frame rate issues
