Picture the scene, you’re a princess going about your normal day to day when a group of soldiers advance on your kingdom, challenging the reign of your father who has held the throne for fifty years. They lay waste to the outer defences, breach the main gate of the castle that has not been taken in over three hundred years and suddenly your hold up in a hiding spot while the soldiers kill your father. The only thought on your mind is revenge and you seek a band of thieves and rogues as your allies to achieve it. This is the story of A Dance With Rogues.
This game plays rather like an old school RPGs such as Runescape, World of Warcraft or Divinity Original Sin II. It tells a unique story through a vast explorable world complete with class systems, levelling, upgrades, magical spells and a variety of other familiar assets to fans of this genre that will certainly make this one a point of interest.
Clunky Yet Charming
The first thing we will focus on is the overall aesthetic of the game. The title takes a lot of inspiration from early 2000’s MMO’s in most respects with character models and environments that are blocky, grainy and unrefined in all directions. In most situations, this would be a negative aspect but in this instance, the game gets away with it. Perhaps that’s down to the fondness we all have for the games of this era and it evokes a lot of nostalgia but regardless, it’s rather charming. The UI of the game helps supplement the shortcomings of the visuals with an outstanding intuitive design that allows you to see all the key information you need with ease. For a casual RPG player that enjoys titles like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim or Fallout, for example, this will take some getting used to but with time, anyone can adapt to this setup.
Dark and Edgy
The game’s story, as you might have gathered from the intro, is a very dark and mature medieval one. Where this can be a very conventional and common approach for games of this nature, this game escapes this fate by really doubling down on the gritty and harsh reality of the setting. This approach really helps with immersion for the player and leads to a really authentic experience.
On top of this, you’ll be treated to a load of opportunities to get down and dirty with all the characters that you meet within the game. The sexual encounters aren’t only plentiful, they are also appropriate within the context of the narrative and handled wonderfully. There is a certain level of maturity and intelligence in the writing that allows these to feel authentic and avoids falling into the trap of turning these moments into juvenile smut scenes which is much appreciated.
The game also has a great deal of replay value and that is down to the emergent gameplay that is encouraged throughout. You will have access to a class system that will vary your experience depending on your choice. The writing also encourages added playthroughs to see all the aspects of the stories and the parts you may have missed the first time. Then you will also have the ability to role-play within this game with a great deal of success so, in theory, there is a lot of scope to play this game in numerous ways.
Thick As Thieves
This game takes the stigma of an adult game and throws it out the window with a game that’s bursting with content, charm, replay-ability and a gritty storyline that delivers from start to finish. The visuals and layout may be off-putting to some and some aspects of the story may be a touch too visceral for a few.
Overall though, this game is a real gem within the adult game genre and serves up an adventure with layers and substance.
- Charming, nostalgic style
- Gritty, dark storyline
- The gameplay is handled well
- Plenty of reasons to replay
- Visceral moments of the story can put players off.
- The art style is quite primitive by modern standards
