Kagetsu Tohya

Kagetsu Tohya is a very interesting visual novel game. It is brought to us by Type-Moon who are best known for their expansive Fate series and also Melty Blood. What we have here is a direct sequel to another one of their titles, Tsukihime, and I would say that in order to get the best out of what this is offering, you need to have played that game first. Even though it is a sequel, you will probably be very surprised at just how different the tone of the story here is.

Groundhog Day

The story of Kagetsu Tohya is about a high-school student called Tohno Shiki. He has a special ability where he can see the death of things! The first game had vampires in it and this one takes a more scaled-back kind of vibe with the story being far lower key and “normal”. Well, I say normal, but the twist here is anything but.

You see, after the first day, you realize that you can relive the same day over and over again. So, you are stuck in this time loop kind of thing where you get to remake choices to make sure things are going the way they should.

Fun For All The Family

Ok, so saying that Kagetsu Tohya is fun for all the family may be going way too far, this is an adult visual novel after all. However, it does give you the option to turn the hentai stuff off if that is what you want. No matter if it is on or off, you cannot deny that this is one truly amazing looking game.

Come to think of it, I do not think Type-Moon has put out a single game that did not impress me when it came to the visuals. Yet, due to the time loop nature of the gameplay, you can see many of the same scenes over and over again which may get annoying, but do not worry, they have you covered!

The Land Before Time

Dealing with time is always hard for a game to pull off, but I think that Kagetsu Tohya does it as well as it could. Yes, the story gets very confusing as a result. However, the game does let you turn on a setting that lets you skip things you have already seen, and let me tell you, you will be using this again and again.

It is your typical visual novel where you have to make choices, but this game throws a ton of choices your way, so many it is very easy to get lost. There is a handy guide included and I am not ashamed to say that I had to use it in order to figure out the right series of events.

I am a huge fan of most of the stuff that these guys have put out, including the game that came before this. However, if I am being 100 percent honest, Kagetsu Tohya never really did it for me. I found the whole thing very confusing and as a result, I do not see myself playing this game again any time soon. I am not saying it is bad, but it certainly is not great either.

  • The idea of the time loop thing was clever
  • I thought that the game looked amazing
  • I liked how they gave you a few things to make it easier
  • It has some very interesting characters
  • The game gives you a lot of freedom in regards to how you go about things

  • I just had a really hard time getting into this
  • Having to repeat the same thing over and over can get old
