If you're a fan of visual novels, you may have heard of Shiny Days, developed by Overflow and released in 2012. It takes a slightly lighter tone this time around compared to its predecessor, but isn’t without its darker themes at times. It’s a remake of the original Summer Days, with some new additions, including a new heroine named Inori Ashikaga, and new endings as well.
As a sequel to the popular game School Days, fans of other visual novels such as Clannad, My Dangerous Life, or the infamous Dramatical Murder may want to check out the Days series for themselves!
*An Important Note! The following review is SFW; however, the game itself is intended for players 18+, and players' discretion is advised!
Premise
The format for this visual novel is from a third-person perspective, as opposed to the typical first-person perspective. It takes two paths, with the newest one focusing on Inori and her relationships with the other characters in Shiny Days. The game centers around a girl named Setsuna, who begins a new job at a seaside restaurant. She took this job for the sole reason that her crush, Makoto Itou, lives close by, and she’s hoping for a chance encounter with him. However, her plans change when she ends up meeting a young girl named Inori, who ends up becoming her roommate after a less-than-stellar encounter in front of the restaurant, Radish.
Graphics and Sound
One of the strongest aspects of Shiny Days are its graphics and sound. The game features vibrant and colorful backgrounds that bring every scene to life! The characters are well-animated, and the voice acting is excellent, adding to the immersion of the game. The soundtrack is very catchy, with a fitting score that sets the mood for each scene. The combination of these elements creates an immersive and engaging experience!
Storyline and Characters
As is typical with visual novels, Shiny Days has multiple storylines and endings, offering replayability! The romantic scenes are well-written and can be quite touching. Every decision you make will have an impact on the story and result in various endings. Didn’t get the ending you were hoping for? Start from the beginning, and keep your future choices in mind!
Personal Rating: 6/10
After considering the game's graphics, sound, story, and characters, we give Shiny Days a personal rating of 6/10. The game is decent, but it falls short in terms of plot and character development. The reliance on sexual content and shock value may not appeal to all players. However, the game's redeeming qualities are its well-written romantic scenes and multiple endings that offer some replay value.
Overall, if you're a fan of visual novels like Dramatical Murder, Shiny Days may be worth checking out!

- Well-written romantic scenes
- Multiple storylines and endings offer some replay value
