I hope you’re ready to play The Bad Kids. As an adaptation of a popular TV series, this game combines puzzle solving, deductive reasoning, and investigation to give you an incredible immersive experience that will keep you gripped from start to finish. With fantastic visuals, brilliantly designed puzzles and an excellent story, you will find this to be a game to remember. If you want something tense and that requires you to actually think a little, then this is without a doubt the game you want to be playing. I had an absolute blast and I’m sure you will too. Let’s get into it.
Gameplay
This title functions much like a simple side’s roller, almost like it could have been found on Newgrounds, except nothing on that site has this level of production value. Much of the game is side scrolling and puzzle solving, you will be looking around for clues and puzzle fragments, as you investigate layers of mystery.
This could sometimes be perceived as less of a game, and more of an ‘experience,’ as there is so much that it offers you. Its not dissimilar from a visual novel like Danganronpa and such, but there is something intensely unsettling about this that haunts you all the way through. I think a good reference game would be Backbone, that has a similar gameplay style.
Unfortunately, I cannot tell you much more without risk of spoiling something, and to fully understand this experience, you will need to play. It’s a very simple game with straightforward gameplay that is easy to learn. The puzzles and quick time events are the bits that may challenge you.
Visuals
Visually, this game is brilliant. It has a very unique look that I have not seen in many other games. Most things are from a side on perspective, but occasionally the cinematography will completely shift to a show you something from a different point of view. The directing in this title is actually brilliant and I was surprised with a few of the ways it chooses to show you something. There is something distinctly cinematic about it.
The environments and character icons are highly detailed, causing you to stop and take a look at how carefully they must have been crafted. Each scene looks like it could have been identically copied from a real picture for reference, and that really keeps you in the game, cementing the atmosphere and allowing you.
Story
In this game you take control of Zhu Chaoyang, a young man in a dire situation, experiencing a nightmarish reality where you don’t know who you can trust. With a deteriorated family, false friends, and the selfish nature of other humans, you must navigate this world from the perspective of a child who battles with the cold, fake, and insensitive adults who you are forced to rely on.
Will Zhu be able to stay a good and kind person despite the terrible darkness he is experiencing? Only time will tell.
An excellent game with some stunning visuals, brilliant storytelling, and a fresh take on a difficult-to-master genre.
Pros
- Excellent visuals that capture the atmosphere
- Fantastic writing that asks some very real questions about the world
