Siege of Dungeon

With Siege of Dungeon being described as a rogue-lite and turn based style of game, I knew that it was something I had to check out. As soon as the demo for the game went up I tried it out and became hooked on it and right away it shot close to the top of the list of the most anticipated games of 2023 for me. I do feel that this is a game that is kind of hard to talk about as it is a bit different from what you usually get in a dungeon style rogue lite, but I will try my best.

A City In The Middle Of The Sea

As you would expect from a game like this, story is not really the main focus, but Siege of Dungeon still has a very interesting premise. A strange castle with a dungeon underneath it has emerged and this place was supposed to be sealed up for good! The nations of the world have sent their best adventurers to investigate and that is where you come in as you head into the place to try and find its secrets, rewards, and horrors!

An Ever Changing Dungeon Of Terror

Like most games of this style, Siege of Dungeon is going to be different each time you play it as the dungeon is randomized. This means that no two runs will ever be the same. However, even more, interesting than that is that the dungeon is grid based. You will be moving from room to room, taking part in turn based combat, testing out your skills with each ferocious enemy as you do. Of course, new gear and loot will be your reward and the deeper you get the better stuff you will get. It makes for a very addictive game and trying to find out your best loadout is a ton of fun.

No, I In Team!

Another interesting aspect of the way that Siege of Dungeon does things is how you progress through the dungeon. Only adjacent characters can fight in the game and you have to decide how you want to move your characters around the dungeon. You can move as a team which is safer, however, you can also split up and then go in and try to surround an enemy. Of course, if this goes wrong, you can be at a huge disadvantage, but if it all goes right, you can give yourself an advantage. This is the part of the game that is hard to explain, but it all works very well and makes this a rather unique rogue lite dungeon crawler!

Blowing Into Your Cartridge!

I know that many of us are kind of sick of the whole SNES 16-bit inspired pixel art that games like this are using these days. However, I feel that Siege of Dungeon does it better than most as the pixel characters here are truly amazingly designed and they just have a ton of personality. Also, as well as standard sized characters, there are these much larger boss style characters that look incredible! I love the whole dark and mysterious look that the game has going on, in many ways, it reminds me of the classic board game, Hero Quest that I loved as a kid.

Pros:

• I love the setting and premise of the game
• It has some very cool pixel art
• The way you move through the dungeon makes it a unique experience
• The turn based combat has a great deal of depth to it

Cons:

• The gameplay does have a bit of a learning curve to it
• Is this style of graphics starting to get a bit old?
