Today we are checking out Rain World: Downpour which is the expansion for the original game. I remember checking that game out when it came out and at first, I did not like it! It was a game that took a while to grow on me, but it was all on me! I was playing the game wrong and it has a look and style that makes you think it should be something, but it is actually far more of a unique experience. I was very excited when I heard that this DLC was a thing, but I will warn you, you do need the base game to play this so keep that in mind.

Slugcats Evolution

What we have here in terms of story in Rain World: Downpour is basically a continuation of the horrible and dangerous, not to mention a very wet world where we have a species called Slugcats just trying to get by. This game is not a huge story driven experience, but the basics are that once again Slugcats need to do what they can to survive, but this time they are better equipped to do so.

The Core Game Experience

One of the reasons that I struggled to get into the original game was because the whole look of the game makes you feel like it is an Ori style of game and while it does have some Metroidvania style elements to it, Rain World: Downpour is more of a survival game where surviving each area and making it to the next one is what you are really doing. Once you get used to the way the game plays it is quite a thrilling experience. However, the developers clearly listened to the “criticisms” that people had over the first game as there are some more user friendly aspects to the game such as a better map, a hint system, and more ways to go about things to name just a few.

The Fab Five!

The big draw of Rain World: Downpour is that we now have five Slugcats that we can play as. In the first game, we just had the one character, but this time around there are five and each one has their own special abilities to make them unique and make getting through this horrible wet world more fun. The Rivulet is fast and can jump high. The Gourmand is a bit on the slow side, but can craft things to his advantages. The Artificer is more action packed as they can blow stuff up. The Spearmaster can always make new spears and lastly, we have The Saint who uses his tongue as a rope to swing through the air.

Like If Ori Fell Into Limbo

I am pretty certain one of the things that made most people want to play Rain World: Downpour was the incredible visuals. It is like a blend of Ori and Limbo, but with a ton of water thrown all over it. This is one of the most eye-catching game worlds that I have been in for quite some time and while this second time around is not quite as awe-inspiring, it still looks great and is a world that I would love to explore even more.

I know that Rain World: Downpour is not a game that you can easily pick up and play. However, as this is a DLC expansion, I feel it is safe to assume that you played the original and if you did and got to grips with it, we have more of the same, but expanded here. I love the idea of the Slugcats with special abilities and I am sure this is going to be one of my favorite pieces of DLC in 2023.

Pros:

  • If you liked the original game, this adds some great new stuff
  • You have five characters that you can play as
  • It offers very challenging gameplay
  • I love the whole style of this game

Cons:

  • They could have taken more risks with the graphics even if they are still great
  • Like the original game, it does take a while to get to grips with the way the game plays
