Hoshizora no Memoria is a much anticipated visual novel that got its start on Kickstarter, where it swiftly raised $90,000 to get special additions made for it and other related content. The story follows the average life of the main protagonist, who attends a small time country high school, gets a part time job, and hangs out with a little girl who looks just like a grim reaper.
If the grim reaper peaked your interest, you’re not alone. This visual novel is the professional version of a fan version that was made, but terribly rendered. Hoshizora no Memoria seeks to be that improvement.
Problems with this visual novel begin almost as soon as you start. The visual novel is riddled with typos, and in places the English translation is entirely missing. The word “literally” is constantly used, although bearable, and the word wrapping is often messed up. You may miss parts of the story because it trails off screen and prevents you from seeing what was said. This is prevalent all throughout the story, and gets worse after the main storyline. It looks as if the first draft was submitted as the final draft, which isn’t excusable in a finished novel.
The game starts out promising, but quickly devolves into one of the most boring, generic, slice-of-life novels of all time. The grim reaper girl is simply there to solve plot problems without any sort of difficulty, and most of the endings are either eye roll inducing or only vaguely boring. Every unique aspect to the game is avoiding to the point of making them irrelivent, and the plot content is so generic, Boob Wars II has more depth.
Main theme: Cute girls acting cute
If you don’t mind cliche, typos, and constant game glitches, there are some parts of the story that are enjoyable. The girls in the cast are cute, and there are minor elements of mystery promptly resolved by the grim reaper girl being a grim reaper. If you’re simply looking for a visual novel that is mainly visual and not very much novel, this game may keep you entertained. This is especially the case if you are a fan of astronomy, as there are some fun conversations to read on the topic.
This game could have been amazing, but fell flat. The fact that it is better than the fan version doesn’t make it a good visual novel. At its core, Hoshizora no Memoria is a generic novel with little to offer the average player, and plenty of bugs to frustrate and annoy the player instead.
If you’re looking for a cute visual novel with a plot, A Sky Full of Stars came out at the same time and has much more to offer in terms of a smooth running slice-of-life with a plot. It may be better to try that game instead.
