Visual novels are a fun way for readers to combine passions for great artwork, game play, and reading. The downside to visual novels however, is that they can take a significant time to get through, with an average of 10 to 20 hours of reading time, and some as long as 40 hours.

For casual readers looking for something relatively “quick” the options are pretty disappointing. Most short visual novels don’t tell the story well. Karakara is the exception to this rule. While it’s a short novel at just 4 hours or so of reading, it does a good job of telling the story.

A post-apocalyptic adventure

This story takes place after a disaster in Earth’s history leaves much of the planet uninhabitable. The people of the future are tucked away in small pockets of livable space, and use technology from the past to get by. Although they understand how to use the technology that isn’t broken, they don’t know how to build their own, which leaves them in a somewhat precarious situation.

The main characters are two restaurant owners who get by on the few customers who visit them, until their daily life is disrupted by finding a stranger on the side of the road. This quirky newcomer changes their lives during the brief, intimate look you get into their story.

High quality gaming

This visual novel may be short, but a lot of work was poured into the making of the game. The story line is sweet, and while it does go off in an odd direction as the game progresses, it never gets dark or depressing. Care was also lavished on the artwork and a full Japanese voice cast, which adds a nice touch to the game.

Options for all ages

Karakara has two versions, an age appropriate one that cuts out all the sex scenes, and a slightly more expensive, 18+ version. In order to enjoy the game properly, you will need to make sure you choose the right version for yourself. If you were expecting an adult game, you may be disappointed by the censored version.

Although the censored version contains no sex scenes, it’s obvious what’s going to happen due to sexually suggestive tone. If this makes you uncomfortable, this novel may not be appropriate for you.

Needs a sequel

The game does feel as if a lot has been left open, and it’s possible this is due to being set up for a sequel. If a future sequel did happen, it would be nice to make more use of the background and other plot features that are talked about, but are a minimal part of the story.

This is a great story for what it is. While the story is necessarily simple, the developers managed to pull off the story by lavishing it with the best in terms of artists, CG, and voice actors to give it life. If you’re looking for a short novel that is still rich and enjoyable, this is a great novel to start with.
