Great things come out when game developers dare to combine some game genres. The variety is what makes them special. And Ignis Universia: Awakening of the Erudite Princess combines some of the most popular genres for indie developers: JRPG and Visual Novels. Of course, one could argue that it wouldn’t technically be a JPEG since it's not made in Japan, but let's ignore this for the moment. This game is still trying to get complete funding on Kickstarter, but you can already enjoy the Demo and much of the game on Steam. But what is this game all about? Well, let's talk about it!

About the game

Developed by Random Potion –who bears absolutely no relation with Dream Potion, the studio behind Mago and Vulcan– this game mixes JRPG and visual novels in what’s supposed to be a “quirky love letter to classic JRPG and Visual Novels”. Why do they mean by this you might ask. Well, it pretty much means that the story is full of references and it’s a parody of the most traditional and classic plots and situations we are used to seeing in both game genres.

The end of the world is nigh, so it's the time that the four sisters to rise to the occasion, as the heroines take on the test ahead of them, and the threat of a horrible prophecy. Will they be able to face the challenge of the return of Galgatax and the rise of the Erudite Empress? Well, that's about to be seen. But what really matters here, the core point of their new quest is to find out if there's truly cake at the end!

Oh, and we haven’t told you about the four Chosen Sisters, which are the playable characters in the game. Of course, each has its own unique powers and set of abilities, so let’s introduce them now:

  • Silvanna Shadow – Rogue (Sarcastic and often angry)
  • Mordina Birthright – Mage (an ex-Cleric)
  • Eleanna Nutseeker – Healer (raised by squirrels, she is a very skilled druid)
  • Princess Zena – Warrior (she loves cake)

What about the gameplay?

The developers mention a lot that this game is a love letter to the JRPG and Visual Novel game style, which makes you wonder how you combine these genres, especially when the JRPG already has pretty much everything a visual novel has. Well, the answer is that you make it a parody. You add elements from other games and mix them together, making something new. For example, in this game, the combat system is turn-based, like the JRPG, but also has elements from the RPG genre, such as the ability to level up, get new equipment, and all that.

Of course, the game doesn’t just have a story, but also a few mini-games. These are all optional, but you will need to play them to unlock more content in the game. As for the Visual Novel part of the game, we could say that it tries to do something similar to Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4, and add relationships and personal character interactions. But of course, the developer didn’t want to do anything too serious, so you won’t see any deep character development or romance. The focus here is to have fun, and enjoy the game while playing through the story.

7

This game is building up to be a pretty interesting title, but make no mistake, it's not one you should take too seriously. It's all about having fun and enjoying yourself. The gameplay is pretty simple, but it does try to be different by mixing two genres, which is always a good thing. The story is funny, and the characters are well designed.

Pros:

  • It's a fun game
  • Has a pretty unique art style
  • The music is great

Cons:

  • A bit repetitive
  • Could use more voice acting
  • Some bugs
