AliceSoft’s Rance series was one of its staples back in the 90s. A guy on a fantasy quest to seduce and get as many cute girls he could, wrapped in a neat JRPG package definitely made an impact on many gamers. Kichikuou Rance is the 5th in the series and introduced a lot of cool new mechanics as well as a whole host of cute anime girls to add to protagonist Rance’s harem.
Here’s everything you need to know about Kichikuou Rance.
An Endless Quest
Rance is on a seemingly endless quest to seduce and capture the heart of as many cute girls as he possibly can. For Kichikuou Rance, AliceSoft wanted to answer the question, what if Rance became king?
They pooled ideas from all members of staff with the goal of creating a game that was truly expansive with a lot of options. The end result is an adventure that foregoes any form of linearity in favor of an open-ended experience. For a lot of games, this would have been a death sentence but in Kichikuou Rance it actually works.
Kichikuou Rance is the first Rance game to introduce AliceSoft’s trademark Territory Conquest system. The entire game is set in a huge map dubbed The Continent. Within it, each territory is marked by its own distinct national flag which you’re able to use to select the ones that fall under Rance’s reign. By doing so, you’re afforded options, such as levying territories for resources as well as to discover new characters. By engaging with an enemy territory, you can set up borders or even mount an attack. Rance can also deploy ninja saboteurs for a quick sneak attack. You can even choose to explore dungeons that surround certain territories to discover treasure and items.
Kichikuou Rance is the first in the series to make use of a squad turn-based combat system. You can choose up to 4 commanders to take into battle and place them anywhere on the map. This system is quite similar to games like Fire Emblem in that placement affects which units can attack at long or short range.
Archers and mages, for instance, are the only units that can attack from the backlines. The other unique aspect to Kichikuou Rance’s combat is that the victor is decided by the defeat of the squad’s commander. This makes direct attacks a possible strategy.
Depending on how you feel about eroge anime games, Kichikuou Rance may be worthwhile to try out. If you can forego some of the sexual nature of the game, you can experience AliceSoft’s creative side at its fullest thanks to the amalgamation of ideas that comprise this unique title.
- Non-linear gameplay with plenty of options
- Interesting turn-based combat with squads
- An interesting take on the Rance character
- May not be for everyone due to it being an eroge game
- The story becomes a little too bonkers because of the large number of characters in the game
