The fact that Narcissu stayed with me for a few days after I had played through it is possibly the best compliment that I could give it. This is actually a game that was originally released completely for free! That is just insane to me as the writing here is some of the best that I have ever had the pleasure to experience in a visual novel game. If you want “hardcore” action, this is not the game for you. However, if you want a story that is going to make you think and tug on your heartstrings this is the visual novel for you.
The End Is Near
What makes Narcissu such a powerful game is the story and our main two characters. The main character in the game is a nameless guy and he has quite the sad back story. His family basically does not care about him and you get the impression that life has really beat him down. That is especially true in that he now has a terminal illness and is going to be spending his dying days on the 7th floor of a medical facility where people who are dying go.
It is here that he comes across a young girl called, Setsumi. She also has a terminal illness and she tells the main character that even though she is going to die, she does not want to die in a bed in this hospital or at her home. It is powerful and moving stuff!
The Journey Is The Destination
The story sees our two main characters decide to run away from the 7th floor and live their last few days or however long they may have together and on their own terms. They just want to get out of there and have no clue where they want to go, but as the name Narcissu suggests. They settle on heading to the Narcissu Fields. Along the way they talk about life, their families and the dreams that they had which will never come to be. The presentation is rather basic, but that is by design. It is designed to give you the bare basics and let your imagination fill in the rest. It should be worth noting that the story unfolds before you without any help from you. I know this is a turn off for some people, but I feel this is a case where the story is so strong that the player's input would perhaps take away from the emotional impact.
I can see why for so many years people have raved about Narcissu. The story is kind of heartbreaking, but along the way, it will make you laugh and also really make you think about certain aspects of the world, especially the health care system! If you want a strong story with engaging characters, you have to play through this!
