I will admit that I did not fully know what I was getting into with Strange Flesh before I played, but this is one of the most interesting gay lewd games I have ever played. I love it when a game is lewd, but also manages to have a message to it as well and that is what they have managed to achieve here. The fact that it also plays like Streets of Rage and Final Fight is also another huge reason as to why I had so much fun with this game.
Your Average Sad Joe!
The story of the game for a beat-em-up is truly fantastic. Strange Flesh is the story of a man called Joe. Joe is your average guy and he is not all that happy with the way his life is. One night he takes a stroll and ends up in a bar called Strange Flesh.
This is no normal bar; it is a sex club for dudes. Joe chats to the strange bartender, blacks out, and then the bartender takes over Joe’s mind and tries to help him free it. The story is very interesting and what I liked most about the story was that it really did make you think. It was like Joe was fighting with himself to be truly happy and I am sure that is something most of us in some way or another can relate to.
The gameplay in Strange Flesh has you playing as the bartender going through Joe’s mind. You have to fight many different versions of Joe ranging from sad Joe, horny Joe, disinterested Joe, and more. These are the parts of Joe's personality that he does not like or wishes could be more at the front of who he is. The actual fighting is basic stuff, but the bartender can use his smoke to make Joe fight for him or even get it on. It is not going to take you very long to get through the game and in all honesty, it is not very challenging either. However, if you enjoy games like Streets of Rage then you are going to probably see this one through all the way until the end.
Sometimes We Can Only Change Ourselves
I was very impressed with the presentation of Strange Flesh. The game starts with a pretty cool cut scene that sets the story. These have a very Super Nintendo look to them and I mean that in the most complimentary way possible. The levels in the game are places from Joe's mind and these along with the different versions of Joe all have a great look to them. I really liked the little details in the levels with this sex den level in particular being very well done.
The soundtrack fits the game perfectly and it does have that sound that makes it sound like you would have heard in a game during the 16-bit era. I for one am glad there is not any voice acting as I think it may have taken away from the game more than adding to it.
I went into Strange Flesh not sure what to expect, but I was blown away. I know that the game is very short, but the way it deals with a man wanting to be happy and having to keep down who he really is, is done very well. The beat-em-up action that the game offers may not be all that deep, but it is satisfying and also fun.
