The Touhou project is a popular franchise with almost as many spin-offs as it has legitimate games. One of these many games is Touhou Luna Nights, a metroidvania style game, that takes place in Gensokyo, a fantasy kingdom.

Although there are many in the Touhou series, Luna Night is unique for its interesting puzzles that involve the slowing or stopping of time. It’s very similar to Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, so much so that it could be considered a parody.

Stopping time

Touhou Luna Nights features the character Sakuya, who has a lot of neat abilities. She has an unlimited number of knives she can throw, and special attacks that can do heavy damage. While her weapon handling skills make her fun to play, her ability to stop time is what sets the game apart.

You can stop time and throw knives at a fast charging enemy, so they never even reach you before succumbing to these weapons. At certain points during the game you may need to slow time down so you can run through a closing door in time, or in order to defeat a boss.

If you’re expecting to be able to hack and slash your way through the fights, think again. Tohou games are notoriously difficult, and Luna Nights is no exception. You’ll need to think your way through these games, and keep careful attention to your MP and Time bars. MP is needed for every attack, and you can only stop time for so long before coming back into the real world.

Pixel graphics

Touhou Luna Nights is a pixelated game, and the pixel style is done very well. The characters are clear and sharp, without breaking from the medium. The bosses are also colorful and beautiful, while also very creative.

Secret Rooms

Although the pathway through the castle is linear, there are a surprisingly large number of secret rooms in these games. These rooms aren’t necessary in order to progress, but they will help make the fights easier. Enter them to get better attacks, stat boosts, and healing. The game also encourages risky play, by allowing the player to heal HP and MP if they get very close to the bosses and other mobs in fights.

One minor downside to the game is that as time goes on, you end up getting a special ability towards the end that is very over powered. If you’re enjoying the game because it is difficult, this can be a bit of a let down.

If you are a fan of bullet hell games, Touhou Luna Nights is worth giving a try. It’s a challenging game that will keep you busy trying to refine your skills enough to defeat bosses and clear the game. You’ll face both puzzles and complicated game play in order to finish exploring the castle and win the game.
