Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night

So far, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is the number one game when it comes to video games that were given life thanks to Kickstarter for me. This is a game that many of us were very, very excited for and I know that I put my money down when this went live. It was a phenomenal success and having the brains behind Castlevania working on this without any Konami shackles was something I was very excited to see.

Stop The Demons

One of the things that I was most surprised by was just how story-driven the game was. I do not want to spoil anything to you, but Gabel takes another character called Miriam and teaches here how to use her “powers” the right way. There are demonic shards and a whole bunch of demons running loose that are causing chaos and they need to be stopped. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night does have a story that did get me quite invested in what was going on.

So 2D HD Pretty

I have always loved the art style of the CastleVania games from the original on the NES, the 16-bit Super Castlevania IV, and of course Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. I would say that this game is a much “cleaner” and more spectacular looking version of what Symphony of the Night offered if I had to compare the visuals and overall style to another game.

While this is not a CastleVania game and it is not full of vampires! I will say that this is a game that could be passed off as a CastleVania game. To go along with these great visuals is a tremendous soundtrack that is perfectly fitting no matter what is happening on the screen.

We All Knew It Would Be Like This!

From the early days of development, we all knew that Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night was going to be a MetroidVania style of game. It is certainly a game that fits into that category, but it truly is fantastic and one of the very best actually. There is a massive amount of surprises waiting for you here and in typical CastleVania fashion, just when you think it has shown you all it has some new ability will give you access to a new area. The game does have some crafting you can do, but there is a lot of farming required to get some of the cooler stuff.

The combat is probably the most exciting aspect of the game for me. One of the best parts about it is when you steal the ability of a bad guy and then being able to use it not just in combat, but to open a previously inaccessible area. You also get familiars that will fight alongside you. The combat is very hack and slash in its style, but some moves do require a combination press to pull them off so there is a fair bit of depth here too.

You could probably tell right from the start that Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night was a game I really, really enjoyed. It is not only the best game I have ever supported on Kickstarter it is also one of my favorite MetroidVania games of all time. I well and truly believe that this is a game that more than lived up to the hype that it had. If you enjoy action games, RPGs, or just good games in general this is a must-play!

Pros:

  • The game looks amazing
  • It looks and feels like a CastleVania game
  • The soundtrack is awesome
  • The game has a ton of content to keep you busy
  • Combat is fun, satisfying and also pretty deep

Cons:

  • I hope that the sequel does not take a long time to come out!
  • You do have to farm more than I would have liked
