Super Adventure Island II
We have known Master Higgins for a long time from his NES, TurboCrafx-16, and Super NES adventures. He's bounced from island to island, on foot and skateboard, past all forms of creatures. But none of his journeys decked him out in armor, loaded him up with magic and swords, and sent him to wander in search of treasure chests. That's right... Higgins has changed from loincloth-clad beachcomber to role-playing fool!
Higgins and his new wife, Tina, hit the open ocean on their raft for their honeymoon.
- Hit the octopus' leg to raise his head, and then whack his helmet.
- At the very beginning, get the sword and strike this rock to start the water flowing.
When a cyclone separates them, they I end up on deserted beaches suffering from amnesia. Higgins later sees Tina being snatched by a gigantic buzzard, so he sets off in search of his forgotten wife -- and his memory.
Targeted toward younger and first-time adventurers, Super Adventure Island II is light fare for RPG fans. But there's plenty of action for all comers. Much like a Zelda contest, you try to build up your hearts and magic for battles with a variety of enemies, leading you to new areas.
Because of its audience, control is very simple, consisting of jump, attack, and magic-use buttons. From a cozy control panel, you can change the weapon, magic, and other powers you're currently using.
The lightweight graphics are cartoony, bright, and colorful in traditional Adventure Island style, but they don't push the animation's frame rate. For example, Higgins doesn't swing his sword; instead, he just sort of sticks it straight out at an enemy. The accompanying sound comes off a little better, featuring pleasant music and nice (though not overly realistic) effects.
As with previous Adventure Island challenges, the emphasis is on the game play, and nothing's lacking there. You'll occasionally be frustrated by trying to find that switch you need to access a key area, but there's plenty of hack-and-slash action in the interim.
- The shovel opens up lots of new areas because you can dig down through dirt and get through blocked pathways.
- Get above these walls and flip the switch.
- Earn money in the casino to buy advanced gear.
Master of His Domain
If you buy Super Adventure Island II for its name, you may be disappointed that it isn't the same jump-and-shoot format that Hudson delivered before. Then again, you may find that the change is a ray of sunshine on this old isle.

As in the previous games, you still run from left to right bashing little creatures. But this time around Master Higgens takes part in a non-linear RPG frantically searching island paradises for his missing wife.
The upcoming lineup from Hudson Soft looks to be their best ever. The first game, Super Adventure Island 2, is the latest in a long line of games in the Adventure Island series. Super Adventure Island 2 is different in that this time around the game has some elements of an RPG. You are now provided with a map of worlds to explore. You also receive instructions from various sources throughout the course of the game.
The rest of the game stays faithful to its Adventure Island roots. Master Higgins returns in his role of the hero to bash his enemies with a variety of weapons, potions and power-ups. The levels are long and challenging, plus include some of the coolest Bosses ever seen on the island!
Super Adventure Island 2 also sports improved graphics and sounds. Both of these factors figure prominently in the cart's improved game play.
Hudson Soft's new lineup will undoubtedly be their greatest ever!
A surprise at the CES show, Adventure Island II makes the translation to the handheld format with very little loss of detail! All of the power ups are retained perfectly!
Everyone's favorite island-hopping dude, Master Higgins, is gearing up for his very first Super NES adventure. Here's a first look.
Higgins thought his days of chasing after Witchdoctors and other island baddies were over. He was just settling down to bask in the sunshine with his gal pal and munch on the various island delicacies when a strange being appeared. Faster than Higgins could peel a banana his friend was turned to stone. Now the Master must search for the cackling weirdo who gave his girl a heart of stone.
This 8 meg action/adventure game is an entirely new chapter in the Adventure Island saga with multiple different levels, including bonus rounds, of hop and bop play. Higgins searches through jungles, mines, caverns, snowy mountaintops, and even dives underwater to track down the culprit. Along the way he snags special weapons such as boomerangs and axes to defend himself, and this time around he also has a Super Jump that enables him to go where no Higgins has gone before. Look for this title to appear sometime mid-spring. We'll have more soon!
