Yurukill: The Calumniation Games

“Prisoners seek freedom…executioners seek revenge…when they meet, the games will begin”. This is the opening quote for Yurukill: The Culumniation Games, and I think it does a pretty great job of getting your attention right out of the gate, don’t you?

I actually didn’t know about this game until recently, it somehow slipped under my radar, but after doing some research, I gotta say, this game seems like EXACTLY what I never knew I needed. Yurukill: The Culumniation Games blends two completely different genres together and it looks like the result is going to be something explosive, fun, and totally unique.

A detective game AND a top-down shootem up?

Yurukill does the impossible and combines two completely different genres together for one cohesive experience. I really cannot stress how incompatible these two genres should be on paper, but somehow the developers over at Izanagi Games found a way to make it work.

It should also be stated that both of these genres are fairly niche with not too many examples of high-quality games to represent them, at least when it comes to gaming in the West. Shootem ups, or SHMUPS as people call them, are still insanely popular in places like Japan, with games like Ikaruga and 1942 showcasing what makes these games so fun.

SHMUPS are typically games where the screen is absolutely filled with bullets (otherwise known as a “bullet hell”), and you have to find a way to not only avoid every single one, but also shoot back and defeat the enemy. It is an incredibly stressful genre for a very particular kind of person. The flip side of the stressfulness is how good it feels to finally break free and clear that level you were stuck on.

It’s a “Detective-like”?

The sort of “Detective game” genre is a bit more vague, technically you could call it a text-adventure, and we see similar systems in most popular RPGs with heavy emphasis on story and dialogue. If I had to pick games that represent this genre well, I would probably have to side with 999, Zero Escape, the Danganronpa series, the Phoenix Wright series, as well as more obscure titles like Hotel Dusk. It’s an experience akin to that of reading a choose-your-own-adventure book, but since it’s a video game, developers are able to create complex and engaging situations for players to engage with. Ultimately, these kinds of games are sort of like puzzles, and it’s up to you to put all the pieces together.

On a personal note, the plot seems to be dark and suspenseful, a bit like the mood you would experience from one of the popular Saw movies, and I absolutely love that sort of thing. This is 100% my guilty pleasure and I’m really happy to see more titles coming out that are like this.

How does it all come together?

Yurukill: The Calumniation Games hasn’t come out yet, but so far it looks extremely promising.

The presentation is stunning, the story is interesting, the SHMUP gameplay actually looks pretty solid on its own, and the overall weirdness has me totally hooked. I cannot wait for this one.

Pros:

  • Unique blend of detective games and shootem ups
  • Engaging story and characters
  • Great overall design

Cons:

  • Framerate issues on the Nintendo Switch version
  • May be a turn-off if you like the anime style
  • Questionable pacing

Yurukill: The Culumniation Games will be available on Nintendo Switch, Steam, PS4 and PS5 on July 8th 2022.
