Today I am checking out Chaotic Neutral which is an upcoming visual novel game that is funded via Patreon. As I write this the game is still in development so there is not exactly a great deal that you can do, you get a very good idea of what this game is all about. I love the sci-fi setting that the game has. One other thing I want to mention is that you can throw them just a couple of bucks on Patreon and that is all that is required to play this.
What grabbed my attention with Chaotic Neutral is the story. While it is not fully finished just yet, there is more than enough here to grab you and make you pay attention. What is going on here is that there is a city called Nirvana and it is separated by rings. The rings on the outside are just chaos and not good places to be, the closer inside you get the more “money” it becomes.
You are trying to make your way through the rings, but nothing is what it seems and before long you meet some people and end up on a quest. As far as visual novels go that have been released in 2020, this one here has a story that I feel puts it close to the top.
Style And Substance
As well as having a great story (well a great one so far) Chaotic Neutral also has an art style that I find very appealing. The game reminds me of stuff like Alita Battle Angel and as strange as it sounds, Life is Strange. The game has a really cool anime kind of vibe, but it does not go all the way with it. The animations that are here so far are a bit of a mixed bag, however, but I had a look and the developer does say that they are working on them.
It is weird in that the game manages to look like it is very well detailed, but at the same time, it is also scaled back a bit. It is the kind of thing that is very hard to explain, but I have a hard time imagining anyone will take a gander at this game and not like the way it looks.
Keep On Moving
The gameplay is not yet finished, but what is here is solid. I liked pressing forward and the different choices that you have to make are quite well thought out and make you get more invested in what is going on. So, while at this stage there is not much I can say about the gameplay on offer here, I do feel that they have set the groundwork for something really cool.
I have had a good time with Chaotic Neutral and it is a game that I am going to be keeping a very close eye on. I like the way this is shaping up. It manages to have a solid story and I also love the way that the game looks. I am hopeful that another update will be unleashed soon. Be sure to throw a few bucks this game's way if it looks appealing to you as I feel it more than deserves it.
