Farworld Pioneers

Colony builders are not a new concept and are becoming an oversaturated genre in today's indie game market. However, this is the first time we've seen a title quite like Farworld Pioneers that's taking the visual and mechanical elements of the genre to different levels. Rather than advance them, the game retracts them to an early 2D gaming era.

The initial screens from Farworld Pioneers showcase what looks to be an arcade-style 2D platforming game that could easily root back to the early 90s. However, it's a sci-fi colony builder where players will interchange between hostile alien planets, crafting, building, and fighting for survival. The premise is not new, but the delivery is for this upcoming title, and it's safe to say we're intrigued.

Taking It Off Planet

There are a few compelling features about Farworld Pioneers that would undoubtedly turn heads for colony builder fans. Besides the game being cased in a visually diverse set of 2D pixelated environments, gameplay stretches a galactic level rather than one planetary location, something not typical in sci-fi base-building games. Players can explore and build in the expanses of the universe.

Of course, the standard mechanics of a colony builder are rife throughout Farworld Pioneers. Players will manage their galactic empire through intense farming, mining, researching, and building towns to stand up against the particular planet's known hostilities. You'll also have to recruit and manage colonists to help grow your creations, where keeping them happy can become a challenge.

But one of the standout features is that you can train and automate your team to do all the arduous tasks for you, allowing you to enjoy the diverse gameplay palette. Let your colonists build ships to explore the galaxy or go on an adventure to exterminate surrounding alien nests. Farworld Pioneers claims to offer a complete sandbox experience, which could tickle a sci-fi fan's fancy.

Farworld Pioneers says it will offer a complete multiplayer experience to make things more enjoyable. You'll be able to join up with friends to build colonies or engage in combat with PvP mechanics. Is there more than a colony sim could include making the experience more immersive? Given what's on offer at the moment, probably not!

The Best in the Farworld

So far, from what's on the table through the demo, Farworld Pioneers will be a massively entertaining experience for those who enjoy a decent sandbox game. Playing it offers the potential to gear the game to what you find amusing, whether building, combat or simply soaking in the worlds around you. The fact that there's no release date means there's only room for improvement, too.

You feel that Farworld Pioneers takes heavy inspiration from Terraria, aiming to deliver a complete sci-fi colony-builder experience as the game did for the contemporary theme. Let's see what ultimately the finished game will provide. But where there's a demo with a metric ton of promise, there's usually a memorable title at the other end.
