A lewd horror game is always going to capture my attention so it is not surprising that Horror Book flew across my radar. However, what really grabbed me and made me pay attention was the hilarious description of what this game is. I am not making fun of the person who made the game at all, as English is clearly not their first language, but my goodness is the description of this game hilarious! I swear, it is a borderline parody with how much it does not make sense. All jokes aside, that is a bit of a shame as I love the vibe this game has so I think it could have told a great horror story.
The Way No Back
Our main character in Horror Book is a cute Japanese woman called, Sayaka. Sayaka is just trying to live her best life and she has managed to find a job and a little place to stay. One night after work she has to go home and for some reason, she is forced to go a very dangerous way, a way that is known as “the way no back”. Hey, that is an awesome premise and I can get behind this chick walking down a haunted ally and being chased and ravaged by horny ghosts…… but!
Wait, There Is A Basement Now?
Well, then for some reason Horror Book adds this extra bit of story where Sayaka comes across a basement that would be great for her family to live in or something like that. Honestly, it makes no sense at all, I think what actually happens is that she goes down this spooky alley, finds a house, and then goes into the basement of this house, but the translation will have you just scratching your head. To be honest, it doesn’t really matter as there is not much in the way of an actual story as you play the game anyway.
Short, But Horrifyingly Sweet
When I say that Horror Book is a short game, I am not screwing around here as I got through the game in 20 minutes, but before you think this is a waste of your time, hear me out. You see, this is best described as a puzzle game. You enter a room, you need to figure out how to get out of the room. None of the puzzles are that hard to tell the truth, an early one for example has you picking up a bear and putting it in the right spot. Some may cause you to think a minute or two longer, but there is nothing here that is going to make your brain work overtime and cause you to have some kind of stroke!
Look At Me!
One thing that I love about Horror Book is the overall vibe, this is a game that has a very creepy look to it. The main character, Sayaka is very cute and the horror stuff is not too in your face, but it does have a couple of potential jump scares. My favorite was when I was in a room full of mirrors and as I walked past, all of a sudden a creepy little Samara style ghost girl was the reflection. There are a handful of lewd scenes where some apparition has their way with Sayaka, but these are pretty basic. The game has a very smooth look to it and if you are into horror stuff, I do genuinely think that you will get a kick out of the style that this game has going on.
If you are in the mood for a lewd game that you can beat in one short sitting, trust me, you can do way, way worse than Horror Book. This game may make very little sense as far as the story goes, but at the end of the day, it is about a cute girl in a basement with horny ghosts and that is all you really need to know about it. This can be a fun little distraction, I do not think I would ever bother playing it again, but I did have fun while I played through it.
Pros:
- Sayaka is a cute main character
- There are some legit creepy moments in the game
- I liked the horror vibes that the game had
- The poor translation was actually hilarious
Cons:
- The story is impossible to follow and makes no sense
- There is not much to the game and you will beat it in 20 minutes max
