Kainga

Imagine if ancient civilizations had access to magical creatures that allowed them to move their settlements around. That, more or less, is the premise of Kainga: a unique city-building game with a fantasy twist inspired by tribal cultures. Grow, prosper, or crush your enemies, as you lead your civilization towards their glorious future. Or not.

There’s a lot to see and do in the mystical world of Kainga. From a merely aesthetic point of view, this is one of the best city-building games we’ve ever seen. Players must learn to adapt to quickly adapt to their environments and remain alert at all times if they hope to leave their mark on history.

Mobile Villages

If you were hoping to find a realistic civilization-building experience similar to Civilization VI in Kainga, then you’d be better off looking elsewhere. What you’ll find here is a fantastical world where entire villages fit on the back of massive beasts that move them around the world.

The objective of the game is simple: lead your civilization and help them fend off against the unforgiving outside world.

Nature itself will be one of the game’s main antagonists. In the fight for survival as a civilization, you can either adapt or perish. Thankfully, Kainga offers players plenty of options to tackle the environment, including moving entire villages from one place to another.

Moving around the map is key if you wish to prosper in the world of Kainga. Every village has a “Thinker” who acts as the town’s leader. This unit is also responsible for providing every technological advance your civilization makes, so it’s safe to say that your civilization is alive just as long as your Thinker is.

To unlock new technologies and stand a better fighting chance against rival cultures, you’ll have to discover sources of inspiration. These places are scattered all over the map, and sometimes, you’ll have to fight to get to them.

Rinse and Repeat

It might not look like it, but Kainga is actually a roguelite game, much like Rogue Legacy. This means that death is permanent for your civilization – once your Thinker falls, it’s game over.

However, the knowledge you gather from the map and enemies will help you in future runs. As in any roguelite game, failing becomes a common element of the gameplay loop, so don’t despair if you find yourself failing over and over: that’s just part of making progress in Kainga.

Thankfully, the game’s world is vast and entertaining to explore, so you’ll never feel tired of the necessary repetition. Add to that the fantastic visuals and you got yourself the perfect recipe for a roguelite that never stops feeling new, even after you’ve played it countless times.

Speaking of visuals, the presentation of Kainga is simply sublime. The creatures’ designs and the way your villagers seem to move in a 2D plane look fantastic, making everything feel like an animated storybook full of wonders. There’s also a decent variety of biomes to explore, which is a necessity in a game like this one.
