The first in the “Summer of Mystery” series, Psychedelica of the Black Butterfly is a dark twist on otome games. Rather than a cheerful romance or entertaining visual novel, this one is a dark and moody story that takes a very different path. If you’re fans of the stereotypical otome game, you probably won’t like Pschedelica of the Black Butterfly. This game could best be described as a detective mystery, and while there is a romance element to it, the story could stand alone without it. If you’re familiar with Bad Apple Wars, this game takes the same idea and improves on it.
A dark plot
You play Beniyuri, a character who wakes up in a mansion with no recollection of her past. You’re not alone either, the mansion is full of people in the same boat as you. In the opening scenes you are chased by a monster, which you must later pursue in order to get back your memories.
The game does a good job of explaining the black and white butterflies, as well as the in-between world the mansion is part of, but it does have some flaws. It’s biggest one being that while it is a romance and a mystery, it doesn’t commit to either. The result is a sort of limbo that is disconcerting. Although most otome games are romance driven, there are also examples of story driven romances out there. This is one game that might have done better to remove the romance entirely.
A voiced main character
In most otome games, the main character isn’t voiced. Psychedelica of the Black Butterfly stands out here, with a main character that is voiced. The voice actors are well done, and are very enjoyable to listen to during the game.
The graphics in Psychedelica of the Black Butterfly are some of the best. The backgrounds are bright, detailed, and colorful. The characters themselves are in keeping with quality otome characters, but leaning a bit more towards modern anime style. The results are enjoyable graphics that help keep the game lively through the whole thing.
Game order matters
One important point about this game is that you shouldn’t skip around in chapter order. The game does a good job of keeping you on track, but there are ways you can force the game to let you play later chapters.
Playing the later chapters first will ruin earlier chapters for you. The best way to play it without ruining it is to start with the main route, and then finish with the Summer Camp End route.
This is a solid game. While it’s not quite as good as some of the later games in this promo, it does offer a lot to the otome player. This is especially the case if you look forward to playing Psychedelica of the Ashen Hawk, since there are a lot of references in it to this game.
- Quality CG
- Voiced main character
- Can’t make up its mind on genre
- Lots of translation errors and typos
