Age of History 3

Since I got my steam deck I have been looking for games that are perfect for it and Age of History 3 is certainly a game with high potential in that regard. This is a grand strategy game, the third in the series as the title suggests and so far, I have had a blast playing this while lying in bed. I will say that the game has launched in a solid state, but it is lacking in the feature department which if you are new to the series may not be a big deal, but if you are coming to this straight from the second game, you may be a little taken back. Or, you could be reading this in the future and the game is fully completed!

A Saga Through The Ages

The premise of Age of History 3 is the same as it was in the previous games and other grand strategy civilization style games. You are tasked with taking your civilization from the early days of human civilizations all the way into the future with the advances in technology that come with it. Now, you could argue that all of these games are kind of the same thing and I would not argue with you, but there is just something about being in charge of a civilization for generations that appeals to me and millions of other people.

Changing Of Times

One of the major things that I always get a kick out of with games like Age of History 3 is the advances in technology. Starting off having to just wage war on horseback and with primitive weapons, to guns, tanks and even the advanced tech of future warfare is always something that I find intriguing and you will find all of that here. There is a large skill tree that will unlock as you progress through the game. As well as the skill tree, you have various units, generals, and buildings that will be added as time goes by. Speaking of time, your population is a major factor in how you progress as a big war can devastate your population, and if your people do not “re-populate” future generations of your civilization could find themselves in a vulnerable position.

The Front Line Of War

When a battle occurs in Age of History 3, your frontline and the enemy's frontline are going to be going head-on in a bloody and violent battle. However, your second line can be just as, if not more important. They can lend a helping hand be it in the form of a more ranged attack or some kind of “specialist” that can help aid the frontline. Also, your second line can actually directly attack the enemy's frontline if the positions match up. While you watch the battles unfold, you have a lot to think about in regard to setting up for war. You can either feel a genius god of war or realize you made a critical mistake too late!

Teeny, Tiny Little Battles

While I have loved playing Age of History 3 on my Steam deck, the fact that this is a game that takes place mainly in menus and on a map screen with numbers for the most part, it is not exactly the most exciting game to look at if I am being brutally honest. However, it is all nice and clear and the fact that I have had no issues reading any of the text or seeing what is happening on the map on my Steam deck tells you that the UI is nice and clean so you should not have any trouble in that regard. The thing is, I am sure after a while I will get sick of the look of the game, but I do not see that being for quite some time yet.

Pros:

• The scale of the game is very impressive
• I loved how diverse the technology skill tree was
• The battles are very exciting
• If you love civilization style games, there is a lot here for you to like

Cons:

• Let's face it, the visuals are not exactly all that exciting
• At launch, it does feel like the game is missing more than a few features

Age of History 3 - turn-based strategy in real time, where everyone can go through the entire path of the world history of human civilizations from the beginning of time to the distant future. Choose a territory and follow the formation of humanity. Choose any time of already existing history and change it with your decisions. No more wondering what you would do in the place of the ruler of this or that state of antiquity. Sit in the place of the ruler and make decisions around the world in the course of history.

Pros of the game:

• Realistic units of all times, as well as historically accurate borders of the states
